I'm the mother of a freshman so can you tell me more?
What are the MCAP graduation requirements?

All I know is it's a new test that the state just made up a year or two ago, and 90% of the kids fail it. The test they were using previously was used nationally and had more like a 70% pass rate.

And the pandemic hit, with MCPS being the last district to open in the second-to-last state to reopen schools. Pearson creates both the PARCC and the MCAP; MCAP is a shorter test, but otherwise very similar.

Can you explain how MCPS outperformed the other MD districts on MCAP that were open?

Graduation requirements by grade are listed here.

For the class of 2027, you can see that they require the Algebra assessment to graduate unless the class was taken during COVID.

They require that the MCAP be taken, but not passed. Pre-covid, the requirement was that they pass the MCAP. Unclear if/when that requirement may change again.

Wow, that's classic. No need to pass; just need to take the test.

Its going to be a huge issue for some kids who aren't being allowed to test at all for the high school programs. We are in virtual and our home school is supposed to test our kids but they will not even respond to emails. I do't see the issue with testing. If your kid is in magnet then shouldn't they be in Algebra2 this year?

No, the only kids who take Algebra 2 in 8th grade are at wealthy Potomac MS, which accelerated 6th graders with sufficiently high MAP scores, or kids who went to a wealthy Potomac ES, which offers AIM in 5th grade. If you live elsewhere in Moco, you're out of luck no matter how high your scores are...

Not true. My 8th grader is in Algebra 2 and he definitely did not attend elementary or middle school anywhere near Potomac.

I'd heard this before, but when anyone asks, they can't name the school because it isn't true.

Oak View is one. There was an employee who responded to a thread a few years back who said that several of the CES kids were taking AIM in 5th grade.

How did the other school districts perform on the PARCC? Oh that's right, MCPS outperformed them on the PARCC too.

Although there may be a few rare exceptions, this is only a real option at some Potomac ES that offer AIM and schools like Frost that advance 6th graders with a MAP-M of 250+.

We were in a DCC school, and DC had a MAP-M in the 280s in 5th. When we asked about acceleration, we were told that wasn't an option here.

You're like a button stuck on repeat. Seriously I think you have a psychological issue. You post this about once a week and it's just untrue.

Wow, that's classic. No need to pass; just need to take the test.

The test will factor into the final course grade (20% of the grade). All four End of Course assessments (math, English, science, government)

https://marylandpublicschools.org/about/Pages/DAAIT/Assessment/EOCs/index.aspx
"The MCAP EOC Exam will be incorporated into the student’s final course grade. There is no requirement for the student to pass the EOC Exam as a separate graduation requirement."

"Beginning with the 2023-2024 school year, all first-time 9th grade students will have the EOC Exam incorporated into the student’s final course grade as required by 13A.03.02 Graduation Requirements for High Schools in Maryland."

Still to be clarified from the state is how this will work with MCPS's semester based grades and when/how the score will get factored into the final grade.

The state also has to figure out how to norm/scale the tests so results are not off the rails bad!

It sounds like it is an option for some and others just skip aim.

Was the original question ever answered or this just devolve into more complaints about where my scores?

Yes, it was answered. If you read the thread, you'll see that currently the graduation requirement is to take the test, but there's no requirement to pass it. Starting next year, the requirement is supposed to be to take the test, which will count for 20% of the final grade of the class.

OMG OMG OMG but that's like a final exam? I thought we outgrew the need for those?

It was hard to find because of all the complaining so figured I'd just ask for a summary.

If a student is enrolled in AP Gov instead of NSL Government, do they still have to take the MCAP test or does the AP exam count if they pass with at least a 3? I noticed that the AP exam is scheduled for May 1st at the same time as the MCAP Government test. Does my child have to take both tests?
