You must be someone in MCPS central office who is worried because Ms. Peetz has been getting interesting information and story leads by cultivating various sources in different ways, including via social media posts. You know, kinda like a journalist. But that's clearly not your line of work.

No, far from. Just a parent who gets sick of her making repeated requests to join or group.

She just wants to expand her audience as much as possible. Her work is first-rate and hard hitting. If you don't like it, you can ignore and refrain from commenting?

Ok, glad you think so. Her work is fine but she is intrusive when not welcome.

I find your criticism more intrusive than Caitlynn Peetz's invitation to subscribe to a (free) newsletter. She is one of the only journalists around who holds MCPS officials accountable for practices that hurt children. She sheds light on conditions within schools, the self-interest and dysfunction among central office employees, rates of staff resignation, misuse of money with regards to special education, transportation and covid, school board election processes, staff sexual harassment and sexual abuse of students, the increase in school violence and the need for more mental health providers, and a million other things. She even reads student newspapers and talks to student reporters. She does all this for little pay and so much aggravation. She's just getting started and I think that freaks some folks out. As more staff resign and Dr. McKnight continues to react to their complaints and resignations by saying "Fine, see ya, you're either with me or you're unwelcome here," I think more people will start talking to Caitlynn Peetz as well.

No one is resigning and we are stuck with Dr. McKnight - good or bad. No one is really holding any of these folks accountable, lets be real.

She rewrites press releases and copies information from other reporters. She has been at Bethesda Beat for years and is not just getting started.

I meant she's just getting started exposing all the rot. Bitter, much?

Stupid much? She has been there 4 years. What rot has she ever exposed in 4 years?

Maybe try reading what she writes.

Reworded press releases. Even you can’t name anything she has exposed.

She gets her information from other news reports, nothing is original. She tried to lie her way into our group and wouldn't disclose who she was - a reporter.

For once, try talking to people with different backgrounds and opinions. Your piece are stale.

I have no idea what that group is as they are a closed group but she does this with any group related to MCPS. She tried to lie her way into our group and didn't identify herself as a reporter.

Hi,

Can you identify what group this is? I’ve never tried to lie about my identity to get into a group. I suspect — based on the way my request was denied — this has to do with my request to join the group dedicated to the virtual academy. It never asked if I was a reporter and I answered all of the questions honestly (no, I don’t have anyone in the VA, and I am not a parent, and I’m just interested). The group denied my entry and I never requested again, so this is an interesting point to try to make. My intent with attempting to join, was to make a post like the one I started here to find sources for a story. The story would have been to allow families and staff to talk to me about their experiences this year, whatever that is, rather than reporting on a pre prepared MCPS presentation at a school board meeting.

If you ever have concerns or questions, you can ALWAYS reach me via email. Caitlynn.peetz@bethesdamagazine.com.

I hope you all have a great weekend!

That's not the group I'm talking about but maybe they didn't want your involvement given you wouldn't think twice about shaming them. If you wanted information about a school, why not call the school and talk to them? They could have provide you with parents.

Yes, all reporters should rely on district designated parents for stories. What the what? And folks wonder why we think MCPS posts here.

One can assume both parents, non-MCPS people and MCPS posts here.

There are so many ways she could have approached getting parents than asking entry into a group without identifying herself as a reporter. Why not reach out to the people who run the group, tell them what you want and ask for their help? To just ask for entry, not identifying yourself as a reporter seems a bit sketchy.

So many people trying to tell an experienced reporter how to do her job! Get over yourselves.

Caitlynn does an excellent job sharing information that MCPS doesn't share well. She digs deep, finds answers when she can, and keeps asking when she cannot.

MCPS is a huge challenge and I find Caitlynn manages them well. No one else is covering MCPS (occasionally when a huge story, we get a brief Donna St George story in the Wash Post), and I am grateful for her work.

+1 She is a local reporter covering our local school system. The only hope of fixing problems in MCPS is media coverage. If all she did was rewrite press releases, then there would be no need for interviews of parents, students, and MCPS staff. There would be no need to report on the opposing opinions to the PR MCPS wants to spin.

MCPS is in a crisis and there’s pet projects galore wasting valuable tax dollars while staff are leaving the school system in droves. There needs to be more transparency in the decision making processes. There needs to be more oversight and questioning by the Board of Ed. We need more reporters covering these issues not less.

This. I think we have too many people here who don't know how reporting works.

Hang in there, Caitlynn! DCUM gonna DCUM.

+1. I don’t know who these angry witches are. Caitlynn is so talented and demonstrates strong ethics and integrity, in addition to unending tenacity and ability to cut through the mcps clutter and make sense of all that is happening with mcps. It has been a boatload of work and I appreciate how incredible she is at asking the questions mcps doesn’t answer.

I just did. Although I sometimes read BB, I wasn't really aware of it so found their post helpful.
