That depends on the family. I was a nanny for the same family for 5 years and often traveled with them. We worked out a schedule in advance that worked for all of us. I had the option of not going and being paid for the week but I enjoyed traveling with them. |
Did they pay you extra to travel with them? We’ve had a nanny for three years now but never asked them to travel with us. Did they pay you a per diem on top of your wage? |
Gross, microwaved lunches? This is not a perk. |
I was paid my regular weekly rate and they paid all of my expenses. I always had my own bedroom. We had an exceptionally good relationship. I realize this would not be ideal for many nannies/families. The trips were usually Saturday-Saturday. I had 2 pre-scheduled days off. We traded off when it came to getting up with the kids and putting them to bed. I did not feel like I was taken advantage of at all. They also weren't the type to go off and do things without the kids. The parents would usually go to dinner alone on two of the nights when it was my turn to do bedtime. The vacations were always low-key so there was a lot of down time. They weren't the type to have an itinerary with things planned for every day. They rented a beach house with a pool and it was a lot of fun. One year we went to Orlando but only did Disney parks two of the days. One of the days was my off day so I was able to use the rental car and do my own thing. Like I said, it wouldn't work for everyone but we were very close. It's been 9 years since I've been their nanny and I still see them regularly. They're my second family. |
My nanny would like that. Thanks for the idea, pp! |
I've been getting Freshly meals delivered occasionally and I really like it. It does not taste like a microwave meal. |
We've traveled with our nanny. We paid her travel costs and normal pay (what she'd typically earn in a week). We like our kids, so they'd spend the day with us while the nanny vacationed as she pleased. Then she'd watch the kids so we could go to dinner on our own in the evenings while the kids slept. She'd put them to bed and then read a book or watch her tablet on the balcony or patio. Definitely not working around the clock. She was an extra set of hands on travel days. |
Sure it is. I guess you have seen those meal delivery places. It’s freshly made meals you just heat up in the microwave. The food is delicious. |
Yes. Most nannies have a fixed travel rate and share a room with the child(ren). |
You didn’t pay her extra for being away from home or having to buy her meals when not with you? |
Her meals were covered as a travel expense. No, we didn't pay her extra for being away from home, but she was working far fewer hours, only a few per day, for the same weekly pay |
You’re lucky. I never would have agreed to that. |
+2. Neither would I. |
Many celebrities hire the high-end sitters at the high-end resorts they stay at. My sister, a teacher, was Johnny Depp's kids' weekend nanny while he was filming Pirates of the Caribbean. She made a fortune. She was on duty from Friday 5pm til Monday 9am. Plus he tipped her an extra $500 he pulled out of his pocket at the end of each weekend. (The kids had their regular nanny traveling with them during the week. She had weekends off.) Most of the resort/ agency sitters were teachers and grad students in Education, Child Psych, etc. All meals were ordered from the executive chef at the resort. Anything, any time.
Parents can consider this option when they travel to resorts, etc. All nannies are fingerprinted, vetted, etc. |
You can always do something non-monetary. Heck, pay for the nanny to have Amazon Prime and/or a membership for Costco or Sam's Club, have her order for you using a household card, then she can use the membership for herself. |
