Traveling with the family is definitely not a perk or special privilege. It’s twice the work and no vacation at all for the nanny. I personally hate it.
That depends on the family. I was a nanny for the same family for 5 years and often traveled with them. We worked out a schedule in advance that worked for all of us. I had the option of not going and being paid for the week but I enjoyed traveling with them.
Did they pay you extra to travel with them? We’ve had a nanny for three years now but never asked them to travel with us. Did they pay you a per diem on top of your wage?
I was paid my regular weekly rate and they paid all of my expenses. I always had my own bedroom. We had an exceptionally good relationship. I realize this would not be ideal for many nannies/families. The trips were usually Saturday-Saturday. I had 2 pre-scheduled days off. We traded off when it came to getting up with the kids and putting them to bed. I did not feel like I was taken advantage of at all. They also weren't the type to go off and do things without the kids. The parents would usually go to dinner alone on two of the nights when it was my turn to do bedtime. The vacations were always low-key so there was a lot of down time. They weren't the type to have an itinerary with things planned for every day. They rented a beach house with a pool and it was a lot of fun. One year we went to Orlando but only did Disney parks two of the days. One of the days was my off day so I was able to use the rental car and do my own thing. Like I said, it wouldn't work for everyone but we were very close. It's been 9 years since I've been their nanny and I still see them regularly. They're my second family.
