How much have you spend for same day COVID testing bc of your private school's COVID rules?

OP here. To be clear, the $1500 isn't for on campus testing. The weekly on campus testing at our Big-3 is included in our tuition. This is for testing because your kid has a cough or runny nose and can't come to school because those are considered COVID symptoms. So, we have to get DS tested off campus, with a PCR test, in order for him to return to school. If we did the DC free PCR test, it takes about 4 days for results to come back. So, if we want DS to return to school as quickly as possible, i.e., the next day, we have to get a rapid PCR test. We usually go to Same Day Georgetown and pay between $175 and $225 for the 1-2 hour results. It's annoying.

+1. They test at school after breaks, and also weekly if the rate is higher than it is now. No cost to me. I know they bill my insurance because I get a statement from my insurer.

We have done some tests on our own when DC was sick, but in those cases we didn't pay for same-day since she needed to stay home (because she was sick). Those were also free via insurance.

Keep your sick kid home. No one wants your cold.

You are choosing private tests that are full pay for 1 hour results. Of course you will pay a premium. Free is available so stop complaining.

I don’t want DS to have to miss more than one day of school, so we pay for the rapid test. We can afford to pay extra. But my point is if you can’t pay for it, then your kid has to stay home longer than a kid whose parents can pay for the test. And there’s no virtual option anymore for kids who need to stay at home. This struck me as unfair. If you don’t care, you don’t need to bother to post.

So annoying. My kid has missed so much school this year. Wouldn’t be an issue if kid had been in school all of last year…. I don’t consider virtual or hybrid school school

We have 3 kids in private (preschool and Big 3) abs never paid for testing. We did Curative or Sameday when needed to test. Tests were always back the same day (except during Christmas time). Kids never missed a day of school because test was late.

Most people at your expensive private can afford it. Maybe you can help others pay.

Curative and Same Day both charge for testing. Do you mean that your insurance covered these tests?

OP: pays $, sends kid to school with symptoms
Classmates: develop symptoms
Classmate parents: have to pay $ or take time off work because kids have symptoms
OP: but think of the families who can't afford it!

C'mon OP, be the change.

I do my part. We donate $$$ to the school, which as I understand goes mostly towards FA. I've spoken up to the school nurse about this issue. The nurse agrees, but doesn't have power to change the administration. The school needs to be the change. The school needs to acknowledge how its policies disproportionately affect poorer kids (and, yes, there are some at the school). Think of it this way- tuition at our school has gone up by about $1K this last year due to COVID-related policies. Unless, of course, you're on FA in which case your tuition hasn't gone up, BUT your kid has fewer days of in-person school.

Anonymous wrote:Similar policies here but we take our Covid test at Walter Reed and they are always same day. So zero expense for me.

WR only tests if you have symptoms so if no symptoms you are lying to them to get one done.

Do you think I’m taking them there for shits and giggles?
Exactly the same policy as OP. Weekly testing is covered and done at the school. So if I’m going to Walter Reed, it’s because someone has a symptom.

We've paid nothing for tests. Two teens (DCPS). School tests regularly. Kids have been symptom free. We have a reserve of about ten rapid tests at home gleaned from the public library, CDC free tests, school giveaways, etc.

In MoCo, I've never paid once for Curative and I've used it many times. I did provide my insurance.

This is the County site, run by Curative:
