The crazies on both sides are just symptoms of the larger disease, which is school boards that ignore their basic, boring responsibilities and have instead turned public schools into a circus. The parents and community activists who show up repeatedly to testify and pander to the far-right or far-left just want to audition to join the traveling show. |
Who in their right mind would want this job. FCPS has been all over the news the last few years-extreme over the top parents-a teacher shortage-a bus driver shortage....TJ chaos...the list goes on. We will get someone but no one will be happy because thats how we roll in NoVA ![]() |
We once had reasonable School Board and superintendents who were leaders, not weak cowards with the demeanor of a used car salesman. It's really up to the current School Board to clean up their act. They could start by hiring someone who won't be a punching bag for their nonsense. And then the citizens can do their bit and throw every last one of these incompetent, hypocritical clowns out of office next year. |
Maybe they will finally split up the school system and then we don't need such an expensive superintendent. Problem solved. |
It can be 3 school systems. East of 95 which eventually might merge with Alexandria. between 95 and 66 and north of 66. Done. |
What she was ranting on about has nothing to do with reasonable disagreements about COVID mitigation approaches. We have members of the public openly accusing SChool Board members of being pedophiles. Calling school librarians “groomers” and saying they buy pornography. It’s completely batshit lunacy, and reasonable people know that it’s nuts, but reasonable people are not turning out for a school Board meetings expressing their reasonableness. So we have school board members getting death threats from around the country, having hate mail arrive every day. These completely unhinged people with their conspiracy theories are going to get someone killed. They are poisoning the whole community. Who is going to sign up to take this kind of abuse? Only people who come with a strong partisan agenda. There is no doubt a lot do anti-trans book banners will be running next time. Will reasonable people oppose them? We need reasonable, regular people to run for School Board, but I don’t know anyone who would sign up to be called a groomer and a pedophile and get hate mail on the daily. |
Reasonable people were reasonable, polite people, and they got repeatedly ignored by this School Board and its predecessor. These members arrived on the scene with a strong partisan agenda, and it contributed to the current circus just as much as it reflects it. You want to have it both ways. You want to call the "ranting" parent part of a lunatic fringe, and yet you come back again and again to center her in the discussion rather than focus on issues that matter to more parents. It's an intentional attempt to distract. So let's reflect AGAIN on some of the ways in which the current and prior School Board have gone astray and lost community trust, except this time let's clarify which School Board members should be held most accountable next year. 1. Dragging their heels when it came to getting kids back into buildings, leading to over 10,000 FCPS students exiting the system within two years - every School Board member except McLaughlin 2. Prioritizing admissions changes at TJHSST in order to reduce the percentage of Asian kids - every School Board member but especially Anderson, Cohen, Corbett Sanders, Derenak Kaufax, Frisch, Keys Gamarra, and Meren 3. Keeping uber-wealthy Langley free of economic diversity - every School Board member but Omeish, but especially Tholen 4. Ignoring struggling IB programs (only 3% of Mount Vernon seniors getting IB diplomas) but spending money on a new "Leadership" academy at IB Lewis - every School Board member, but espeically Derenak Kaufax and Keys Gamarra 5. Spending money on building additions while nearby poorer schools remain under-enrolled or more overcrowded schools get ignored - every School Board member 6 Converting Dunn Loring administrative building back into an elementary school when it isn't needed, in order to save a dog park in Oakton - every School Board member, but especially Frisch 7. Litigating with the Youngkin administrative over "local control" at every opportunity - every School Board member, but especially Pekarsky |
Everything required with keeping FCPS a "top-tier" school district is at odds with the noble thing to do as Fairfax moves forward with an increasingly globalized and economically, racially diverse population.
That is the core of the issue. Keeping standardized tests scores as high as possible to keep FCPS at the top of the ranking list requires continued segregation of good and bad schools, gifted vs. general ed, the privileged and under-privileged. This is why every issue is so polarizing. |
You want to cleave off the worst schools in the county and then merge them with even worst schools, and you somehow think that will go over well? |
I think it would be tough to get a bill through Richmond that would allow it. |
On the other hand, it might also be hard to get a bill through Richmond that would extend the moratorium on the incorporation of new cities, which if I recall correctly is set to expire automatically in 2024. Certainly if things don't change in FCPS there will likely continue to be declines in FCPS enrollment, driven largely by more affluent families pulling their kids out of FCPS. |
I still don’t see why we should expect better candidates to come forward. |
I vote for Ilryong Moon. He knows the system well and had more common sense and decency than any current School Board member.
And perhaps he could restore the Asian community's trust in FCPS after the federal court found that FCPS and the School Board intentionally discriminated against Asian students. |
People just paid 300k over list price for houses specifically because of the school district. They weren't planning on the extra cost of now going to private, so you can count them in as lifelong FCPS families. |
Prices have never been higher in our neighborhood, nor has the percentage of parents sending their kids to privates. Lots of generational wealth changing hands, along with high incomes, gives people additional options. FCPS operates like it’s the only game in town and the declining enrollments tell a different story. |
