| I don't think the Chinese want to "control" their population numbers down, they ae actually slightly panicking (as are the Russians) that their population is shrinking and too fast. this is probably due to the communist obsession with a large working class population, a large middle class (the evil bourgeoisie) has been historically cast as an "enemy of the people" so the powers that be can step up and control everything "protect the people". What happens when the people don't want to be protected? They need a class of poor workers to feed off of and control b/c communism was a political theory developed in response to the end of feudalism and the advent of the industrial revolution, see "Animal Farm". his is also why the Russians want the Ukrainian refugees to exit the war zone into Russia, gives them a whole new group of desperate workers to exploit. All of the people who said that Covid is like the black plague and will create a race for human capital were right I suppose. |
| As we've increased trade with, travel to, and communications with both Russia and China over the past 30 years, a number of Americans have come under the misapprehension that these governments are basically like the U.S. or Europe. They are not. I feel like a lot of people have been surprised by that fact in the last couple of years. |
I would never say "good for them" because the government control does not just manifest in the total lockdowns of millions. It manifests in plenty of other sickening ways. But, it's true that they don't have the medical infrastructure to handle another Wuhan. And their vaccine is crap. So, lockdowns it is. |
Can they not purchase a better vaccine? Or is the path they are choosing somehow preferable to that? |
Ego and pride pretty much. Yes it’s ok to sacrifice your population for nationalistic sentiment. |
+2 they’re using their own vaccines and paying the price. Though I’m sure the elites got their Pfizer somewhere. |

Interesting thread on Hong Kong. Cases are up everywhere that “locked down” during Covid, including New Zealand, but deaths are skyrocketing in Hong Kong. The low rate of vaccine for the elderly is the difference. That’s the only thing that matters. History will show that post-vaccine, everything else was wasted effort, and, at best, delayed the inevitable.

More on Hong Kong…this is an interesting way to visualize the threat differential based on age:

300 dead Americans a day from fentanyl poisoning. It’s now being marketed to kids as candy or an adderall pill. |
| My guess is they know something about COVID that we do not. There are going to be more and more variants that the vaccines aren't going to cover. We will be in trouble again soon. That's my guess. |
Soon as in how soon? This thread was revived after 4+ months of sitting idle. |
Ha ha, I didn't see that. But I mean "soon" as in, imminent. COVID is evolving. We are seeing that. We'll probably be in the thick of one or more deadly variants that are not controlled by vaccines sometime in, I dunno, the next 6 months to a year? Just guessing. |
|
I don't think it is going to be as severe as we have seen the first time. Researchers and people have caught with the learning curve and the next variant is not going to be perceived as deadly.
For China, it is a different scenario though. They are hell-bent on keeping zero-covid policies and they won't open for next several years. |
Bingo. Are they acting dumb on purpose - because it pays handsomely? |
Like what do they know |
