| Just order the chicken with broccoli, but ask for it without the broccoli, because your kid doesn’t like it, and without the chicken, because you are vegetarian. |
I mean...I'm a vegetarian and I would just pick out the broccoli and eat it. Vegetarian means not eating meat. I understand if not eating anything that has touched or been cooked with meat is OP's rule, but don't act like it's some universal definition of vegetarianism. |
Many, many vegetarians are not as lax as you. They do not want vegetables and sauces cooked with meat. It’s very common. PP was rude - NP |
Question—why is this? I understand a lot of vegetarians are strict, but in this circumstance it can’t be that they are responsible for the death of a chicken—they are placing an order for chicken and broccoli for the kid. So they are culpable. Is it that they are repulsed by the idea that the broccoli touched the meat? Are they concerned they might eat trace amounts of meat (for example, if the meat flavored the sauce)? Again, as a meat eater I’m just trying to understand why this line is drawn where it is for many people. |
Then you are not a true vegetarian. |
Being a vegetarian is not always about ethics. Chicken has a flavor (as does beef and pork), that flavor and taste effect sauces, vegetables and other items when cooked together. If you do not like the flavor your do not want to eat broccoli or rice or whatever else is in a dish. |
|
Order it without the broccoli. Most of the time, they are fine with accommodating. The price is the same though so don't ask for a discount. If you want the sauce to be entirely different, that is an different dish.
Sometimes, they will point you to a different dish that is just chicken, nothing else. |
Keep doubling down and looking more ridiculous by the post. |
I was not rude. That poster did not understand the basic definition of being vegetarian and kept digging in. Educate yourself or listen instead of trying to cram your views on others. |

This reminds me of a time when my mother-in-law prepared some stir-fried tofu in bacon fat for my wife’s vegetarian cousin. MIL didn’t really understand the problem—when we explained it to her my MIL said that the cousin could just pick out any pieces of bacon. Needless to say, my wife’s cousin didn’t eat the tofu (but got a good laugh out of it); I thought it was the best-tasting tofu I’d ever had. |
I would say the “checks notes” poster seems like more of a bully than the other responses. Very rude and you knew why she wasn’t eating the broccoli. |

I make this shrimp lo mein recipe quite frequently and have substituted chicken for the shrimp.
It is delicious. https://www.allrecipes.com/recipe/223100/quick-shrimp-lo-mein/print/?recipeType=Recipe&servings=4&isMetric=false |
Ohhh a True Vegetarian! NP here, but I am of the school of not precious or picky too. I grew up not wasting food and eating what I was served. Now that I'm an adult I'll pick out vegetables from a meat dish I am serving my family and I just won't waste food. Don't care what touches what. So I applaud OP trying to not waste the broccoli and having the chinese place not include it in the first place if she doesn't wish to eat it. I also get that it impacts taste for certain people and I respect that as well. We are all True and all Different. |

this thread reminds me of Jack N's line "hold the chicken"
