We threw our DC’s name in the hat and she was selected, although she doesn’t want to leave her friends.
Anyone with experience at Hamm vs HB?

No, however, the friend thing is really hard with my kid at HB. We are in south Arlington and her HB friends live far away so they're not really close, and she no longer hangs out with kids from her home elementary school. Well, she does hang out with one really close friend, but not when that close friend is hanging out with others. Everybody says HB is great and DD loves it so I assume it's a good tradeoff, but I don't like the friend issue.

Of course you can always pull your kid out of HB if your kid really won't have it.

Not taking HB would be nuts.

Not to mention friend groups change radically in 6th.

Try explaining that to an anxious 5th grader…

I think they said something about that at the parent orientation night I went to. They said that the very few kids who leave do so because they really want to be with peers at their home schools, and Casey seemed to think that withdrawing was the right choice for them.

You can try HB and then if you don't like it, your home school will always be there. Hamm isn't going anywhere. You will unlikely get a chance to go to HB again so you should take the opportunity to give it a try.

Equalize the enrollment numbers with other APs schools or close this down. Our schools are too crowded! So what do these idiots do? Blow 100 million on a cute little school with extremely capped enrollment. Exactly what Arlington needs!

In case you missed this on the other thread, it really exemplifies how unbalanced things are.

Check out page 5

HB has “1” class over 27 students.

Other HS each have close to 100 classes with over 27 students per class

https://www.apsva.us/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/2021-22-Class-Size-Report.pdf

HBW should be as crowded as the MOST crowded high school, then you know people aren’t attending just to avoid overcrowding.

How can HB be that crowded when the building capacity is 775. Even at full capacity it doesn’t come close to the comprehensive high school which is 2200 each.

True, but right now they don't even allow it over "capacity" while all other schools routinely are over capacity.

You would see some larger classes like in the neighborhood schools, so they should accept more students, and run at the same overcapacity as other high high schools, with some larger classes to accomodate.

Just want to double-check- the waitlist number I got is if a slot opens at my kid’s current school? I thought we had a good number until I heard that!

That’s correct. Waitlist numbers for 6th and 9th are for your current school. Waitlist for other grades are countywide.

Yes – it’s the wait list number for your child’s school.
