Anyone got selected received info on the shadow day? The schedule is on the website but is there separate communication for the day to confirm attendance and go through any process (vaccination, waivers etc)? It seems to be a whole day event for the kid and not sure if it can be shortened?

My kid did this day and I wouldn't recommend shortening it. Your kid is walking around the school with other kids who are thinking about going to the school next year, as well as with their guides, current sixth graders. It seems like a fun day for the visiting kids, and if your kid is really considering going, you might want to let them do the whole thing in case they make a friend or two.

Start your own thread, will you? We get it, you are mad the school exists and you are probably mad your kid didn’t get in (and you would have happily sent them if they had.). But it does exist and it isn’t going anywhere anytime soon so your comments are not relevant to kids/parents who are trying to decide what to do in the next few weeks.

Oh gosh, that person has already started two different anti-HB threads in the last few weeks. Please consider just doing some yoga or having a nice glass of wine.

Sorry, there are multiple anti HBW PPs. I plan to start a campaign with SB to turn it into a high school only program. PP was someone else.

I am not sure why APS would not consider more MS or HS given the overcrowding. It seems the county has stable and strong financing from property tax and other sources. One option maybe charter schools or schools that charge something for those who are willing to pay for a smaller size, if setting up a new school is too costly. It can also run on lottery (with some slots reserved for eligible income families) so everyone has a chance.

I don’t know everything about this, but I think the root of the problem lies with the county board. They never fully fund the schools. Maybe the school board doesn’t always allocate the funds perfectly but it’s not like there are enough budget items they could cut to find the money for as many schools as are needed.

You must be new to Arlington, lol.

Charter schools? No thank you don’t squander public money or more boutique hard to get in schools. And illegal in VA for now.

Schools that charge? That’s a private school.

The clueless in this one run deeps. Do you have kids?

You can just show up on your school’s assigned visit day. No rsvp needed.

Anyone with experience at Hamm vs HB?

HB parent here. I strongly recommend having your child attend the visit day at HB. A lot of kids go into it thinking they don't want to leave their friends at other schools, but fall in love with HB once they've spent a full day there.

Another HB parent - and I completely agree with PP - my then 5th grader did not want to leave her friends either, but really opened up to the possibility after visiting because she had such a positive experience. She is now in 7th and loves HB.

Basically if you turn down HB, you will rue the day forever. This is like winning the real lottery. Don't squander it.

NP. If more parents would just accept their kids' desire to stay with friends, or heed their kids' lack of concern about their neighborhood school, HB would be available to more kids who actually need or would significantly benefit from the program v. their neighborhood school. This is why the lottery system needs to change. If we're going to spend all that money on special programs, they should be making every effort to ensure those programs are being accessed by the students who would most benefit from them.

How would they determine that? Tests, applications? Teachers' recommendations are subjective, as are parents'. I don't think you would narrow down the applicant pool that much, so how do you choose if not lottery?
