How will schools with mask mandates handle maskless kids starting next week (1/24)?

I just don't see that happening though, at least not with the younger kids. There's no way they have the stamina/bravery to stand up to a teacher or principal on this, regardless of what their parents may want or coach them to do. Maybe in high school? But that's really assuming they aren't already embarrassed to stand out in general. I just don't see kids making a stand on this. I predict it'll be teachers making the stand against masks. They would be the ones in a position to actually fight it.

Northam's mask mandate was legal, in part because it came during a time of a public health emergency so governmental powers are somewhat expanded. Youngkin made sure to proclaim that we are no longer in that public health emergency, so he is not afforded those expanded powers. The EO is outside his legal authority on a number of grounds. Even Republicans admit so.

If the mask mandate came during an emergency, and that emergency does not exist anymore, how legal is continuing the mask mandate? Hmmmmmm

The CDC still recommends masks as one of many mitigation strategies.

Youngkin says we're not in a public health emergency so he doesn't have the expanded powers Northam had. TBH I'm not sure if the expanded powers would enable him to contradict VA law.

The government has broader powers during a public health emergency (well established by law), but that doesn’t equate to broad powers without the emergency. Basically, once the emergency is over, the Governor can’t use his authority to prevent a school from imposing their own protective measures.

For example, right now a school can require students to wash their hands before lunch and the Governor has no authority to override that. Now replace hand washing with mask wearing.

The principal at our middle school did a PA announcement to the student body today that regardless of the executive order, masks will be required to enter the building on Monday. They always have a bunch of disposables for anyone who forgets theirs, so I imagine they will do the same on Monday and hand them out to anyone who doesn’t have one. If you refuse, I imagine they will sit in the office until their parent comes to pick them up. Wouldn’t surprise me if they have a space designated for those kids to sit all day if their parents won’t come get them.

Out of the 100+ students I teach, I think there will only be 1 or 2 who will try to take off their masks, and both of them are known to act out anyways because they have a lot of home life issues. They would do it for attention, obviously.
