What would you serve for lunch for people you don’t know well?

If you want to showcase fruit you can make a beautiful fruit plate with artfully sliced fruit arranged side by side, not a disgusting bowl of slopped up fruit spoiling at different degrees of rapidity. And if you’re the type that adds some fruit juice or worse, honey or sweetener to it that’s even more disgusting. Seriously let’s put an end to this.

And OP is not asking if they SHOULD be having people over. They are asking, what should I serve? Stay on task, DCUMers! The answer is the one who suggested the Mediterranean platter or the soup and (regular green) salad option.

I somewhat agree with your fruit salad tirade. But if the fruit salad is cut up within an hour or so of serving and doesn't have any juice or honey added, I think it fine.

Quiche and lasagna are too rich and heavy IMO.

Are these people American? If so, I would so chicken salad croissants, but only if you can find good ones at a real bakery, (i do a mostly yogurt with just a small spoon of mayo, and curried style). Not Costco garbage. Then cut the sandwiches into thirds and arrange on a platter. That way people can pick just a small piece if maybe it isn't their fav. Have some fruit and green salad available. Maybe a homemade muffin too

In my circles the most common food restrictions are: no pork, no meat, vegetarian, lactose free, gluten free and no/low carb. So, I would serve broiled salmon, some version of mixed greens salad, and a couple of vegetarian side dishes, one of which will be vegan.

Big green salad or cut up veggies and hummus
A vinaigrette-based pasta salad or potato salad
Selection of nice sliced meats, cheeses, and rolls
Brownies or chocolate chip cookies
Iced tea, lemonade, and sparkling water

I'd add high quality grilled chicken breast, caprese platter with fresh mozzarella, but also dependent on quality tomatoes which are rare lately. If kids attending, then add a pasta dish with penne or mini rigatoni, bite size grilled chicken breast, and broccoli in a mild Alfredo sauce. If not that, a quick penne alla vodka sauce with mini meatballs (turkey or beef). Don't forget rolls or soft baguette plus dessert.

I think the key is options. I would do a big salad...good for dieters and vegetarians, bagels and cream cheese, chicken salad, and fruit.

Lasagna isn't good for people with dairy allergies or gluten sensitivities. If she's trying to account for the possibility of food restrictions, she shouldn't make any sort of casserole.

I suggested Mediterranean spread. But sandwich tray or other kinds of trays also work.

I expect people to speak up if they have allergies or food restrictions. Why do you people always assume that people coming over to your house to eat wouldn’t speak up? I always let my hosts know that my kids are allergic to peanuts and tree nuts, and I offer to bring our own food if needed.

You’re a shit just to not ask or consider the possibility.

I suspect there's some sock-puppeting going on. Anyway, who does this when we're in the middle of the largest Covid spike since the beginning of the pandemic? Only savory croissant eaters, obviously As a French person, I reject the entire notion of savory croissant. Heresy.

Vraiment, mon ami
I'm offended on behalf of the people of France as well as the people of the Subcontinent.
And for the life of the chicken that died for that monstrosity.

Sock puppeting about chicken salad on croissants! What is DCUM coming to?

I would eat it if served to me, but it seems very midwest church lunch to me.
.
I like the charcuterie idea, especially the caprese bites, and some salad, and maybe the pasta w/meatballs and vodka sauce. I'd probably also just ask about dietary restrictions

To me chicken salad can be eaten alone, along with greens, or in a sandwich. I am not sure why the hate. There are a million ways to make it that are not just chicken drenched in mayo.
