We're long past due for an overhaul of our system. More wards and jungle primaries are desperately needed but yeah, the powers that be will never let that happen. |

Do we really think the big developers of the Wharf + owners of Nats Stadium and Audi Field will be represented by Trayon White in the Council? The Lerner family taking meetings with that fool?!?
No way in hell. They will remain Ward 6. Hill East is gone, tho. They better get accustomed to calling Council Member White's office. |
Except it wouldn't do that. In practice all that would occur is that the new appendage effectively becomes disenfranchised. At least that's what happened to Hawthorne. |
PP here and I would LOVE to see the Wharf and Stadium area dealing with Trayon White! And then I would like it even more when that big money comes to get him off of the Council. |
Now I could get behind this. |
By "finally take over," I assume you mean "take back?" Because that slice of Ward 2 was Jack Evans's for years and years until he gave it up in the last redistricting (but conveniently kept the Convention Center, population center that it is). It sucks to live at the confluence of 4 wards and be basically everyone and no one's problem. |
I really think we need to add 1-2 more Council Seats and create a new Ward centered on Shaw, NoMA, and a part of downtown DC. Give those people some damn stability. |
How far into hill East? I own a house there. What blocks are they going to take? |
Stupid question but would redistricting like this do? How would it affect life? I don’t get it. What are the negative aspects if parts of navy yard go to ward 8? How does that affect them? Does it really? Would it mean like more taxes or less services or what. Please explain like I am 5 about wealthy areas being redistricting to poorer parts of the city. |
|
It doesn't really mean anything - the only logical redistricting will mean that parts of ward 6 closest to the river will become part of Ward 8 and parts of the Shaw stovepipe return to Ward 2. Just because you don't like your current council person (under the redistricting) doesn't mean that you will suffer any ill effects. It's not like each councilperson runs their own little fiefdom FFS.
- a resident of said stovepipe who has been redistricted twice in the past 16 years, and has lived to tell the tale |
The wealthier parts of the city will be neglected by the White. He doesn't need their votes to win. White's constituent services are abysmal at best, so good luck getting help with whatever municipal issue you're dealing with. The needs of Ward 8's residents could be anymore different than the UMC homeowners of Ward 6. Frankly, I don't think White's office will even be able to handle the influx of calls & requests from current Ward 6 residents. Basically, you're on your own. |
What would happen is that there would be no council member that cares about what happens in that area. Basic things like snowplows and pothole repair would happen less. School districting and parking concerns would be ignored. That area would be a sacrificial lamb to whatever city wide balance of power negotiations happen on big issues. It's not about money. It's about differing interests and representation. The area would be too small to have any influence on its Council race and would thus have its neighborhood interests ignored just like happens to Shaw and Hawthorne now. |
Shaw isn't neglected and I've actually been totally fine despite being redistricted. Snowplows, potholes, etc -- those things are happening centrally. Are you saying that -- Ward 8 is poor, so they don't get resources like snowplows, schools, and pothole repairs? Are you saying that you only get services based on how wealthy your ward is? Come on - this is just plain silly fearmongering. |
Trayon already stops caring about you if you live north of Good Hope Road SE in his current ward, because that's the "rich" section of Ward 8 (it's also the section that doesn't vote for him in droves). He certainly is not going to send any care across the river if/when Ward 8 absorbs the southern portion of Ward 6. |
Worse, they will become the scapegoat for every problem in ward 8. |
