When Will MCPS Quarantine Rules Change?

Is the goal now to have zero cases?

103 positive cases. Out of over 1 million people. That is a tiny number.

No. It's October 2021, not December 2020.

103 NEW positive cases yesterday. A seven-day new case rate of 61.58 per 100,000 residents. The last times Montgomery County was at about that level were August 7, 2021, and April 22, 2021. And October 13, 2020, but that was obviously before the vaccines.

It's possible to make a valid argument that the current public-health response to covid is inappropriate because [reasons], but it's not possible to make a valid argument that covid is over.

So there's 100 new cases per day so 365,000 covid cases out of 1,000,000 per year? So you're saying over a third of moco has had covid?

With over 90% of people vaccinated, the 103 positive cases is almost irrelevant. People will continue to catch and transmit Covid even when vaccinated. Even if the county was 100% vaccinated, we would still see positive cases.

We need to look at how many deaths (and maybe hospitalizations). How many deaths were there in the county due to Covid yesterday?

Go ahead and look it up. I’ll wait.

Nobody is saying ‘Covid is over’, but yeah - the current public health response is worse than inappropriate and has been for months. Especially with regards to kids.

You are saying it is over to justify your poor behavior. Mcps is not reflective of that vaccine rate. And except if you’ve has a blood test for all vaccines you casnot say you are fully vaccinated. There are outbreaks in Maryland at schools. Why do we need a dead kid or two to take this seriously. This isn’t going to end alone with these vaccines.

What???? This makes zero sense.

the 100 positive cases includes MCPS students, who are in school, unvaccinated, and wearing masks. 100 cases is nearly irrelevant, and case count itself is irrelevant when 90% or more of eligible people are vaccinated. We need to focus not on cases, but on hospitalizations (which have been increasingly low and there is no strain on the MoCo hospitals). Once kids have the option to be vaccinated, we should remove all restrictions.

It's the seven-day new case rate. I bolded those words for you. 61.58 new cases in 7 days, per 100,000 residents. So an average daily new case rate of 8.80 per 100,000 residents (61.58 divided by 7). Or about 677 new cases in a week, or an average of 97 new cases per day, for a county of about 1.1 million people.

THIS

We need to focus on hospitalizations and deaths. The number of cases is irrelevant.

Our goal has always been not to overburden the hospitals. We have been immensely successful with that in Maryland. Why are our kids still being punished in this county?

7% of hospital beds are currently occupied by patients who have covid. Same as on August 22, 2021; May 5, 2021; and October 31, 2020.

Once kids have the option to be vaccinated, then they can get vaccinated and won't have to be quarantined in MCPS.

It's still raining, we're all still wearing the raincoats (including the kids) which have generally enabled us to stay dry, and you're saying, "We have stayed dry, why should our kids be punished by still having to wear raincoats?!"

Exactly. Montgomery County is not, and has never been, Texas, Florida, or Alabama. Our policies should reflect location conditions.

Also, for the PP that said there were 360,000 cases a year in Moco needs some remedial math. If there are 100/day x 365 = 36,500 cases all year. The Moco dashboard says 81,338 total cases and 1643 deaths (since March 2020). https://www.montgomerycountymd.gov/covid19/data/

If it was only drizzling in one small corner of Cloverly, no one in Bethesda would be wearing a raincoat.

Yes!

And what is with the PP’s stupid analogy? Is that PP really comparing wearing a raincoat to quarantine for 10 days.

Wearing a raincoat is a tiny inconvenience, if that. Needlessly forcing kids to quarantine for 10 days is proving to be a huge hardship both on kids and their parents.

Our kids are wearing raincoats and holding umbrellas for adults who don't want to get wet.

How about quarantines for people who go to bars, restaurants, etc.? Oh yeah, we could care less if there is spread in those places. Because going out to eat and drink is important but learning in person and staying employed are not.

And when MCPS is closed because the roads are icy in Poolesville, people in Bethesda complain. What's your point?

Update: we now have PCR tests in schools but still have 10 day quarantines for kids who are negative. I am a teacher and this isn't just about my own child. Its about all the students who are affected when I have to be home with my kid for quaratines when he isn't sick.
