Cutest or/and most intelligent dog breeds, in your opinion?

We got a sheepadoodle because we wanted a cute, fluffy, smart dog. He’s so dang adorable.

(Yes, a designer doodle - deal with it!)

We are getting a Havanese; they are so cute and smart. Our friends have cavapoos, golden doodles; they are super cute and smart.

There’s different kinds of smart with dogs. Goldens are very smart about figuring out what humans want and how to manipulate them. Super easy to train (and win all the obedience titles plus are the models and actors of the dog world) but not independent thinkers.
For independent thinkers, you want a collie or shephard. It’s like IQ versus EQ or something like that.

German Shepherds as family pets are terrible. They need way more exercise, training, and mental stimulation than an average family can provide. I have been charged by MULTIPLE German Shepherds while walking my dog. Their owners seemed to believe they were under voice control.... They tend to become dog reactive and extremely protective. I used to work at a doggy daycare and German Shepherds were trouble makers and constantly needed to be removed from the group. They were worse than the huskies. Rescues are full of 6-12 month old German Shepherds because their teen months are horrible. I also just saw a post on my Facebook feed of a family begging someone to take their 7 month old German Shepherd because it has repeatedly nipped at the kids. Someone on DCUM keeps recommending them as the perfect family pet. There are so many better options!

I’ve had German Shepherd Dogs all my life. I’ve never seen any of these behaviors. This isn’t a breed issue. It’s a training issue.

10000% a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. They are loving, fluffy, loyal, and super smart. Just be very very careful to get them from a reputable breeder as there are terrible health issues in the lines. Ask for a three-degree pedigree with clear hearts.

I love whippets and small greyhounds. They’re good looking, smart, and cuddly.

My mutt is adorable but kind of dumb. I've also had super smart mutts. I think we can all agree that chihuahuas are ugly and dumb though.

That's the point of my post. The average family or individual person does not have the time to give German Shepherds the training and exercise they need. They are working dogs. I was just stating my experience. I can think of ONE well trained German Shepherd that I have met. I'm not saying they can't be great dogs, there is a reason they are used as military dogs, police dogs, and service dogs. They just need an outlet for their energy and intelligence and it hard for the average household to give that.

Haha, the last thing I need in my house is a dog who is an independent thinker. Give me the big, dumb blonde!

This, 100 percent for any of the big athletic working breeds. We had them but we lived on a 12 acre farm, my dad worked with them daily on training and we had multiple dogs so they had a pack. They were rarely home without a person because my mom was a teacher and my dad had a job with long blocks off (think first responder).

A single dog in a townhouse with parents working daily is not ideal for these.

Agree. A lifestyle like that for a German Shepherd is just cruel. Get a chihuahua or something like that. Shepherds need a purpose and lots of exercise unless you want major behavioral issues.

I love German Shepherds but I live on a hobby farm and am retired with lots of time for training.

+1. Sometimes I think my poodle is more like a human than a dog. Amazing memory and notices things that I don't notice. Basically does everything except talk, but even does that in his own way. Seems to listens and understand almost everything we say, even if we are not talking directly to him. Cute and non-shedding as well.

Labs! They are so much work but they are SO sweet!

You probably already know this, but most intelligent breeds are commonly thought to be Border Collies, Poodles, and German Shepherds. Cuteness is in the eye of the beholder, of course!
