Cutest or/and most intelligent dog breeds, in your opinion?

Smart is a bit overrated though if you aren't prepared for dealing with and providing the correct level of mental stimulation for the intelligence.

Cutest is really a personal preference thing. I think the retrievers are all really cute, but others like bulldogs, etc.

This! Smart is not necessarily a good thing. Oh the things smart dogs get into ...!!!

Beagles!! So adorable!

They’re also very wily and manipulative, which is intelligent (to me) but also perhaps undesirable!

Alaskan malamute.

Smart, like pure intelligence with intensive training or most obedient and easily trained? Your "cutest" is throwing me off a bit here too. General rec: if you're looking for a family dog wouldn't recommend the "smartest" breeds. Teenagehood i a b++tch.

Smartest I’ve ever known is a Viszla. Also very beautiful, wonderful with kids, sweet (but very protective), and crazy active.

Miniature schnauzer was easy to train, and turns heads each and every walk, and makes everyone smile.
That cute face and head tilt can talk you into giving him any extra treats or sharing your own food even if you know it’s a bad idea.
He is so loyal - he figured out the way to go to the second floor so he can get a better overview of the parking lot and see if your car is coming back yet.
I love my miniature schnauzer.

German Shepherds as family pets are terrible. They need way more exercise, training, and mental stimulation than an average family can provide. I have been charged by MULTIPLE German Shepherds while walking my dog. Their owners seemed to believe they were under voice control.... They tend to become dog reactive and extremely protective. I used to work at a doggy daycare and German Shepherds were trouble makers and constantly needed to be removed from the group. They were worse than the huskies. Rescues are full of 6-12 month old German Shepherds because their teen months are horrible. I also just saw a post on my Facebook feed of a family begging someone to take their 7 month old German Shepherd because it has repeatedly nipped at the kids. Someone on DCUM keeps recommending them as the perfect family pet. There are so many better options!

I’ve had German Shepherd Dogs all my life. I’ve never seen any of these behaviors. This isn’t a breed issue. It’s a training issue.

That's the point of my post. The average family or individual person does not have the time to give German Shepherds the training and exercise they need. They are working dogs. I was just stating my experience. I can think of ONE well trained German Shepherd that I have met. I'm not saying they can't be great dogs, there is a reason they are used as military dogs, police dogs, and service dogs. They just need an outlet for their energy and intelligence and it hard for the average household to give that.

This, 100 percent for any of the big athletic working breeds. We had them but we lived on a 12 acre farm, my dad worked with them daily on training and we had multiple dogs so they had a pack. They were rarely home without a person because my mom was a teacher and my dad had a job with long blocks off (think first responder).

A single dog in a townhouse with parents working daily is not ideal for these.

Agree. A lifestyle like that for a German Shepherd is just cruel. Get a chihuahua or something like that. Shepherds need a purpose and lots of exercise unless you want major behavioral issues.

I love German Shepherds but I live on a hobby farm and am retired with lots of time for training.

Agree with this. Objectively, most people do a terrible job at training their dog. For smaller breeds, this can lead to annoying but inoffensive behavior. I love dogs, but a poorly trained 130 lb dog is terrifying to me.

+1 We loved our miniature schnauzer too. We called him a big dog in a little dog body.
