Anyone know what the Middle School Magnet Process will be like this year?

They switched to COGAT which doesn't really tease out your outliers anyway, so why not have it be a lottery among your high performers?

There are lots and lots of kids in MCPS that can benefit from an enriched curriculum and MCPS has chosen not to increase the number of spots in these magnets programs. My guess is that they are on the road to being done away with completely.

Like the 15% lottery last year? Are they trying to kill the magnets?

You are replying to me. I don't really understand your statement. I don't have an issue with a lottery process.

So students who are mostly just above average at STEM get slots in a magnet while outliers are ignored by the program designed to provide them an appropriate education?

Actually, I think a good chunk of the STEM high testers ended up at Eastern. The program is challenging, and they'll learn to be good writers before they head to Blair.

Way to make this about you and your kid with a completely irrelevant comment to the topic of this thread.

Not at all. I'm responding to the previous comment about STEM students, magnet (PP didn't specify which one), and so-called "outliers," which DC and DC's cohorts definitely are. Also, the topic of this thread say "Middle School Magnet," not "Takoma Magnet." I think parents of current 5th graders might like to know that there may also be a STEM-talented cohort for them at Eastern next year

It was one of the many things quietly handled during the covid crisis in 2020. The judge dismissed the suit since since admissions are now "lottery based." This means that no one will be able to prove racial discrimination in future magnet admissions. MCPS really has good attorneys (and for $11M outside their budget, they should).

In the process, the magnet program was trashed. Now the top performers go to their home schools while magnet slots are filled with "lottery winners". Now Equity Initiatives are bigger in the Org Chart than AEI.

It would be interesting to see who the "lottery winner" parents are, and who they know, but that's private info.

If this type of program change fills you with pride, be sure to know who all the incumbents are in the next boe election.

I agree with you that the lottery process is likely here to stay. Did MCPS publish demographic information about this year's MS magnet classes? If # of URMs stayed the same or increased, this process is a done deal. If the lottery means more enriched programming at home schools than I am all for it.

THe eastern picks from our ces were among the weaker students but it was a lottery so I guess that's bound to happen.

Everyone knows the magnets aren't even the same. My kid got into TPMS and I'm grateful but there were many more deserving students.

You got it wrong.

The federal judge denied MCPS's Motion to Dismiss. This means the parents' lawsuit will continue.

Takoma Park placed:
Asian 26
Black 26
Hispanic 20
Two or More Races 5
White 47

Does this mean there is no achievement gap anymore?

The breakdown isn't that different compared to previous years.
