Bullis v. Landon v. St. Andrews

For our middle schooler. Good athlete, bright kid. DH wants a coed environment. I think that would be too distracting. Like the "feel" of St. Andrews though. Anyone have a similar choice to make? Which one did you go with?

Landon isn't coed.

Well obviously the H wants the boy to go to Bullis. I agree with your H.

I know nothing about St. Andrews. I would have written STA but the St. Alban's mom's might ask Jeff for my IP address and correct me in person. Charming group.

Landon is by far the best academically and for college placement. I also think it is a great place to be right now. Old stereotypes die long after they have really ceased to exist.

No kidding. Read the post more carefully. OP thinks a coed environment would be too distracting. Hence, whether coed or not is something that they are weighing.

By the way, I do wonder whether Landon might not rebound reputationally if they went co-ed.

St Andrews seems like a fine school. Some of my daughter's friends felt that it was too small and felt it was a bit suffocating once they reached junior year.

My child went to Bullis and she/we were generally pleased while she was there. She got into a very competitive college and Bullis prepared her well to handle the workload there. I know there have been lots of changes over the past few years at Bullis though so I don't feel like I can comment about it now.

Landon offers great academics and a great arts and athletics program. Based on interactions I had with Landon boys while my daughter was high school aged, I think the school has a long way to go toward teaching boys how to interact with and respect girls and women. The boys learn the right things to say, but there is an undercurrent of disdain toward females. This may have changed over the past few years.

That is my take.

That will never happen. The alumni firmly support the all boy model.

This is just my observation. But upon meeting a Landon and Bullis family for the first time, within 10 minutes, somehow they have injected into the conversation that there kids go to Bullis or Landon. It's like they think it's a status symbol or something. That has never happened when I've met a St. Andrews family. Needless to say, I've found St. Anderws families to be generally much nicer and less pretentious than those at Bullis and Landon.

If charm is the topic, why feel the need for a gratuitous shot at a school not under discussion?

It's a comment about being corrected on other threads. If you type st.a. StA or St. A you get corrected it is STA.

Sort of like the grammar nazis on DCUM.

St. Andrew's is a down to earth community that brings out the best in it's kids. The teaching staff is wonderful and are increasingly being sought out by other independent schools to show them what they do. As one poster above said in a different context, old stereotypes die hard - St Andrew's academics are at least as good as those of these other schools -- they've added several more AP and college courses over the past few years while continuing to appeal to wide range of kids, and their stronger academic kids have attended top schools without being athletic recruits (although they have some of them, I am sure not as many as Landon or Bullis) While St. Andrew's isn't a sports powerhouse, its basketball team actually defeated Landon this year and its cross country, track, and golf teams are strong, while new coaches have been hired for other sports.

St. Andrews is indeed beefing up its BOYS' sports program -- all you have to do is look at basketball and then the fact that they hired Landon's top assistant coach in lacrosse. They are not doing anything similar with respect to girls, and the local word is that they figure the sports will bring in more boys and they will just be resigned to many more boys than girls enrolled.

I have kids at St. Andrew's and have never heard anything like planning for a gender gap. In fact, I've seen administrators work hard to try to make sure things are even. although I will admit that it seems like the girls coaches don't write as many news stories as their counterparts for the boys teams. I'm not claiming the school to be a sports powerhouse for girls or boys -- nor that it is really aspiring to be one on the level of Prep, for instance -- but they are making healthy strides forward with both girls and boys and the girls have been very competitive in some sports. Obviously that varies a bit from year to year in a small school, but they have had some girls play college ball in soccer, lacross, basketball, and on other teams. I think the boys basketball team has just gotten more press this year because they had an unusually strong year and some of their strongest players are underclassmen so they should be competitive for some time. The middle school actually has some strong female athletes who will be moving up in quite a few sports next year also.

Seriously, I don't have a child at any of the three schools, mine are in privates in DC but, Landon is, by far, the best and most desirable of these three. There is no contest on that. Bullis and St Andrews are very fine schools but they are not in the same league academically or in college placement or in alum network as Landon. If your son does a shadow day at Landon and dislikes it, then don't send him the but, if he likes them all equally, and seem capable of finding his place at all three, Landon will set him more firmly on the road to success than the other two.

Academically, what classes does Landon offer that the other 2 do not offer.
