St. Andrew's is a down to earth community that brings out the best in it's kids. The teaching staff is wonderful and are increasingly being sought out by other independent schools to show them what they do. As one poster above said in a different context, old stereotypes die hard - St Andrew's academics are at least as good as those of these other schools -- they've added several more AP and college courses over the past few years while continuing to appeal to wide range of kids, and their stronger academic kids have attended top schools without being athletic recruits (although they have some of them, I am sure not as many as Landon or Bullis) While St. Andrew's isn't a sports powerhouse, its basketball team actually defeated Landon this year and its cross country, track, and golf teams are strong, while new coaches have been hired for other sports.
St. Andrews is indeed beefing up its BOYS' sports program -- all you have to do is look at basketball and then the fact that they hired Landon's top assistant coach in lacrosse. They are not doing anything similar with respect to girls, and the local word is that they figure the sports will bring in more boys and they will just be resigned to many more boys than girls enrolled.
