US has no good options in Ukraine

It is - the question is, can they keep it up? If they can change the hearts and minds of the people, it will make Putin's job that much harder.

Come on, governments! Surely there's a back channel way of supporting these erstwhile pirates!!!

Thank you.

Coincidentally, the Russian Duma just passed a bill criminalizing with up to 15 years of prison time what they consider to be misinformation about this very same topic.

Obviously, the point of their bill is to silence speech, particularly opinions, that differ from the state approved narrative.

No. Pretty sure that's anti-fact. It criminalizes calling what Russia is doing to Ukraine a "war" or "invasion".

Russia considers calling "this very same topic" a "war" or "invasion" to constitute criminal misinformation.

No idea what "anti-fact" you are talking about. I think you just did not read carefully.

I was responding to the idea that they are criminalizing opinions. That this was an invasion and a is a war is a fact and not an opinion.

Remember that their whole disinfo machine starts with the idea that there are no facts there are only opinions.

So the Russian soldiers are incompetent fools who don't know how to coordinate an attack effectively, and they're war criminals who senselessly murder families?

Why is Zelenskyy showing mercy to these guys and letting them call their moms in Russia?

This is not ethnic cleansing type of conflict..

They’re allowing them to contact their families because they want to follow International Law and because it lets a handful of Russians at a time know what’s actually happening.

I watched the full russian POW video a page back. At the end, he thanks the ukrainien people for not killing him, and asks that surrendering russians be allowed to return home and tell the truth. He says that so many people are brainwashed that this is probably the only way to get some semblance of truth out.

What a disaster

He’s very eloquent and it’s obvious he is speaking from the heart and extemporaneously. The translation doesn’t include all the little asides that make it very clear that this is not scripted. He’s also older than a conscript type—maybe an officer? He looks at least 40, so probably old enough to remember Soviet period.

Yet. There was that whole "final solution" to the "ukrainian problem" rhetoric from the accidentally posted victory statement and the question of the mobile crematoriums. If they thought this was going to be a quick cakewalk then those crematoriums weren't for their troops.

Ethnic cleansing involves either/or:
1. Massacre. Force hundreds into building mass graves and shoot them into it.
2. Systematic rape as a weapon, to birth the victor's children.

It was implemented in the Bosnian wars.
It has been implemented in nearly every uncontrolled, large scale conflict.

It's the ugliest and most horrific crime against humanity.

I fervently hope we will not see any of that in Ukraine. I do not think so, because ethnic cleansing is reserved for when warring factions are of different ethnicities and "othering" each other. In this conflict, the aggressors look like the victims. Indeed, Russians were witnessed phoning home complaining they didn't know who to shoot, since everyone looked like them. A lot of Ukrainians speak Russian. This may be what saves us from the worst.

Kind of like today's GOP which puts opinion on an equal footing with fact even when the opinion is completely destroyed by fact.

Excellent article, PP, thank you.

It highlights the importance of cyber warfare, which the general media doesn't talk about as much.
