We've been house hunting for almost 6 months, our lease ends in March so we really need to find a home soon. Our budget is 750-850K, and we were hoping to buy a home in Bethesda/Chevy Chase (as everyone these days, I know). We have 2 kids and have been looking at 4 bdrms homes, but at that price range I can only find inventory in North Chevy Chase (Near 495/Jones Bridge/Rock Creek. Can you share what the area is like? We have 2 toddlers who would stay at home with a nanny (so having other kids in the area to play with would be amazing) and I've heard that North Chevy Chase elementary is not terrible. Husband and I commute everyday to downtown DC, so I'm scared as hell of taking Conn ave everyday because of traffic. Any thoughts?

| Purple line. |
| OP here, thanks PP, I know about the Purple line, I used to live close to highway, so believe me - light trains don't scare me at all- and I think MD is pretty broke to start building anytime soon. I plan to stay there for at least 10 years so I'm more worried about schools, neighbors and commuting. thanks! |
| We used to live in that neighborhood and really liked it. The schools are very good. The commute was fine. I don't remember it being that big of a deal. We moved to a different and recently moved back. We live in the District which I love, but I wish that I hadn't sold our house. |
Our housekeeper lives in North Chevy Chase. She is very happy over there and quite pleased with the public school offerings. My husband's driver picks her up around 7:00 in the morning and at least at that time, traffic on the Connecticut Ave is manageable. She once told me that she saw a rather large raccoon in the park near her house so I would be quite careful. |
| Thanks PP, I was hoping to get a housekeeper, not move to their neighborhood, that's discouraging... |
I'm reasonably sure that was a prank post. |
their neighborhood? |
There are many raccoons in the Rock Creek park, seeing one during the day is not good when children are out playing on the jungle gym swings. |
And Wow! What a snob you are. |
So the language describing how "my husband's driver picks up our housekeeper" did not arouse your suspicion? |
| OP here, this will teach me to never post again in DCUM...thanks for the lack of valuable comments |

Well this may help. We live in NCC and move here because it allows for a reasonable commute for both of us. We have advanced degrees as do, frankly, most of our neighbors. The schools are very good - scores not as high as Whitman and Wooten but the pretty close. It's an area and school district for people who are well off but not rich, educated, and more down-to-earth than "real" chevy Chase, though most don't have the same multimillion dollar income.
As for snarky comments, it is an anonymous forum, and you did come off a bit snooty with the "their neighborhood" comment. I suspect you were saying you wanted to be in a more upper middle class area than working class, and NCC is that, but people are very friendly and more unassuming. I don't think they would have appreciated that comment in person or anonymously. If that bothers you, it's not the neighborhood for you, I'd think. |
Snob much? |
This is a thoughtful post. As for your snobbery, and you displayed it wantonly, the trick is to be a snob under the radar. Comments such as yours will be summarily trounced even if the trouncers secretly agree with you. |
