OMG. Now we are comparing the whole TPMS program with the whole Frost. Just BRILLIANT. |
What were we comparing? |
How about number of TPMS AMC8 honor roll kids *for each grade* over the past three years? |
You can check it out on the link provided above |
TPMS should be 100 for each grade. Program selects 100 top kids for magnet science/math program. Other schools should have very few or none, if selection is fair and transparent. This entire thread says at least one thing, non magnet parents/Kids have suffered social humiliation for so long from magnet parents/kids that they are up and arms to prove that non-magnet kids are also capable and smart, and there are kids with better science/math Caliber in the non-magnet schools. Getting into magnet proves nothing. It gives social bragging rights by parents/students, grow up!!! |
I am sure you have the data. Here is what I found for the 7th grade: 2018 TPMS has 9 7th grade honor rolls (not impacted by the new selection) 2019 TPMS has 4 7th grade honor rolls (impacted by the new selection) You still want us to believe that the magnet program has got better? |
Yes because amc8 success correlates well.with attendance at AOps, Dr. Li, etc. Amc8 success correlates less well with IQ tests. |
|
I truly admire you. You should seriously consider working for the state department. |
The TPMS teacher has just said the the AMC 8 matters. Now this? OK. What measures IQ? Not CogAT, right? |
Now they are just saying that math competitions are irrelevant. TPMS is stronger!!!! It has just got stronger because MCPS says so. Deal with it. |
Asian-American kids doing great? Or some other category? |
Np.
A lot of stupidity in this thread and it's gone on for 21 pages. Fact is the AMC 8 matters. It's not about going to Dr. Li's. The kids that do well are very bright. It does help to practice the problems but any kid who doesn't have a high math IQ is not going to do well on these problems. Another fact is the makeup of TPMS kids has changed under the new selection process. They are using criteria other than raw numbers to select the kids so a percentage of these kids are not the same as the ones before. It's not the whole 100 kids. It is probably more like half. The other half may have been there under the old system or the new system. The big difference in the kids is interest and motivation. It used to take a lot to apply. It was a tedious process and you had to really want it or your parents had to really want it. Now you just sit back and you get picked. This will naturally result in some talented kids getting in who may not be interested in math team which my personal opinion is not really great for TPMS. If I were MCPS I would add some kind of new layer to the admissions process that looks at interest. This isn't elementary school anymore. The kids have a better sense of what they like or whether they want to be in a magnet program. DD is at a CES and got in the wait pool. I do think she would have been a strong candidate under the old system even though she does not prep due to high scores. She may have tried out for the math team. Her good friend who might have been one of those stars on the math team did get in, but is not going due to there no longer being a lot of kids from her CES accepted. I support the changes and universal screening except for the thing above them trying to look more at matching kids with what they like to do. |

The real issue is that using a laughably easy test such as Cogat to screen for selective magnets is silly. They should be using an AMC 8 or even an AMC 10 test. Then they'll have achieved astronomical self selection levels (mathematical speaking), and all parent dissent can be instantly stomped out. As a bonus TMPS will never ever, ever, not in a long time ever, lose a single math contest to anyone else (assuming all the selectees actually chose to go there and don't punt on acceptance). |
