5th Grade CogAT : Number Correct

Anonymous
My kid told me he rated the science magnet as high as he could (though he told me that was a 5), and said he wasn't at all interested in the "language arts" magnet. We didn't tell him about the magnets in advance of the CogAT but he said there was a little blurb to read about them before answering. DC did not get in.

I am the PP and I was told that 25% of the CES kids, who had been part of the pilot universal screening for the CES, had received offers before any appeals/waitlist process (I was asking the administration for some information they might have about our home MS for comparison and decision-making, and they said they expected to have a lot of these conversations with parents because so many kids had been offered magnet slots). I do know a few more that got in from the waitlist later in the spring, too.

Which CES is this?

Which CES is this?

Drew. It (along with Fox Chapel) had universal screening a year before the other CES schools did -- that first class of universally screened students is now in 6th grade.

If you want to know more about Drew
https://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/departments/regulatoryaccountability/glance/currentyear/schools/02747.pdf

Drew is about 49% FARMS and 24% ESOL, 52% black, 42% Hispanic.

It looks to have the highest representation of URMs of all CES programs.

Cold spring and Clear spring parents - how many got in from your CES last year?

Cold Spring CES: < 5 (<10%) for the first round. The final number is about 10 after appeal and scratch from waitpool. This year looks a bit better for the first round, but still significantly less than 25%.

Big difference. Both Drew and Cold Spring have about 52-54 students, right?
So admission rate at Drew was 13/52 versus <5/52. I just saw on a thread that people were reporting last year that Cold Spring only had 2 kids admitted.

Not really. 4 for cold spring at the first round, still astonishingly low compared to Drew. Yes, class size is 54-60 for Cold Spring CES.

Drew also pulls from 4 high school clusters (~20 elementary schools feed into it), while Cold Spring pulls from 2 clusters (11 elementary schools). Several of the Drew kids were admitted to both magnets last year.

Is there a list anywhere of how many got in from each CES last year? I am wondering how many got in from my DS‘s CES This year but have no way of knowing, except for who we might run into at an open house.

This is further evidence that the central admin was trying to balance the number of kids from each ES/cluster. They clearly didn't want one cluster to be overrepresented at the magnet.

Since someone asked, I am this poster and my DC was invited to both magnets.

We are in same boat. A few kids have shared, but my DC is being super cautious bringing it up because of some drama around the debacle around the CES admissions process a couple years ago.

So many friends had been excited about getting on the waitlist when they didn't actually get on it (there was an error in the mailing) and a couple kids even read that wrong and thought they had gotten in to CES before they found out they didn't. Sharing that news that didn't turn out to be right caused huge embarrassment!

Now my DC is concerned that she is is the only one in her CES class who got in to Eastern Humanities because no one is sharing.

I guess we'll find out at the open house as well!

That shouldn't make too much of a difference. They supposedly tried to make each of the CES areas equal in size relative to the spots. So possibly Cold Spring may just have larger elementary schools/high schools.
