Don't play for an ECNL team if playing time is a concern, the only time the bottom of a bench plays in that league is at showcases. (If you are Lucky) Join the DA... |
I don't disagree entirely; however, when the coach takes a player for a team, he's making a commitment to that player, just like the player is making a commitment to the coach and team for year. It's not fair for either party to cut bait during the season. |
I don't know that the PP left mid-season. I didn't get that. BUT, let's be honest, many coaches are NOT making a commitment to the bottom players. What they are doing is picking up practice players for the ones they do care about. |
Typically in the ECNL players at the tail end of the roster don't play much at all, it is a very competitive league, at McLean it was the same, my daughter got minutes at showcases and scrimmages, she was not in the match day 18 multiple times. At the time I was angry with the coaches, after taking my daughter to another club where she is enjoying her soccer I realized it was not the coaches and in fact she was playing at the wrong level for her. I actually think the coach was doing my daughter a favor having her on the team that year because she could have easily been moved along. |
I eas You can accept that if you like. I don't. I'll accept it when a coach tells me that up front, or cuts me a deal on the yearly tuition because my kid will only be a practice player, or doesn't expect my kid to be at every practice, game, tournament. While I'm willing to accept not all kids will be treated equally, I don't accept ignoring kids who the coach chose and made a commitment to. and make no mistake, a couple injuries to an 18 team roster and the depth gets depleted quickly --- and a coach would be livid if a "practice" player didn't show for a tournament. |
Who said cut bait during the season? We are in early spring season and tryouts are also starting. If the current situation is not good for the player it makes sense to take a look at other teams and try and find a better fit. But finding the better fit starts with being honest with yourself about your DD. Perhaps if she isn't playing much on her current team it is more about position depth or team needs than it has to do with the players actual ability. If she is behind a YNT candidate, for example, then only a injury is gonna get her in the starting lineup regularly. Some kids might also be overachieving in regards to league choice. Instead of DA or ECNL, NPL might be a better fit. Regardless, you need to take inventory of the situation and do what is best. And frankly, regardless of seemingly better options it might not matter because she has friends on her current team and a role she is comfortable with. |

Oh man is this really what I'm in for? DD still has a year before ECNL or DA. Now im worried should I even try out? Should I talk to the coaxh when the time comes and ask "hey will she actually play or just sit in the bench all season". I love watching DD play its the reason I travel and pay. Yes I would be angry if she never played.
Shes a good player but is she the BEST? I don't know depends who you ask. Forums like these that could scare a parent from even trying out just for the fear of riding the bench all year after playing non stop for her current top team. |
If your kid is in a bad situation it is up to you either sort it out with the coach or find a better fit. Coaches and Parents alike pick the wrong kid/team. It doesn't really matter what you utopia you have in your head about how the year was supposed to have gone, it is about dealing with the reality. If the reality is that your kid isn't getting playing time, regardless of what you thought she would get, this is your time to asses WHY the year didn't go as planned. You can throw all the snark at me you'd like but if your kid is sitting, your kid is sitting. Figure out why. Perhaps your coach is a jerk, perhaps your kid isn't a starter. I don't know and I doubt anyone cares. For the 4 kids or so on your team who aren't starting, others are and glad they are. Find a place where that can be you and your kid. |
ECNL is a competitive league, it is the same as AAU basketball at the higher end. Best players will play at a certain age. Do not run away from the competitive nature of the league, if you're kid at any point is not enjoying the experience or is not playing as much as you would like find a new club where you're kid will be happy |
| You could talk with the coach if your daughter gets an ECNL team offer. Many clubs will/can dual roster bubble players with the clubs ECNL team and the B team. |
| Will the offer say whether you're on the A team or B team? Or they just say your accepted into ECNL team (whichever team it is) |
Clubs will tell you where they see your player, whether it's ECNL, ECNL DP on not ECNL or not ECNL. |
