So, he dodged. After seeing McElveen on tv, it will not be Stuart. More division. And, to think that McElveen voted for the motion. Of course, he never met a left cause he didn't love. Hynes and McElveen wrote a letter to the editor the UVA newspaper condemning UVA after the Rolling Stone article came out--but before the retraction. Strong attack. Wonder if they ever retracted it? Doubtful. So, they basically took "fake news" before getting the facts and attacked their alma mater. |
Why are you making this about Ryan McElveen, rather than Stuart? Clearly, McElveen understood that the motion that he voted for provided both the Superintendent and the School Board with the flexibility reflected in Scott Brabrand's recommendation. |
It will not be Stuart because 80 percent of the people who voted didn't want to keep it Stuart, not because of McElveen. If anyone is to blame it's the keepers who stayed home instead of voting, even with Stuart on the ballot. Also, the motion that the board voted for proposed Stuart hoping the community would get behind it, and only 18 percent of those who showed up chose to get behind it, despite the board's plea for the community to do so. I really don't think you can blame Brabrand for dodging, he really didn't have a choice given the numbers. |
It got the most votes. Far more than any other proposed name.
Keep spinning |
Far more? Not quite. With Scott Brabrand recommending four names to the School Board in addition to "Stuart," it's now clear it's not going to be the "new" name, not that it would ever be understood as anything other than JEB Stuart in search of his initials. |
Mostly optional expenses. If parents and boosters feel so put out they won't pay. I have a feeling many will happily write a big old check. And they don't have to change the school colors, so unless the "decorations" included a life sized portrait of dear Jeb, I think you're good. And no, the money theoretically being spent on this was never going to address class size. Your concern trolling is so touching. |
Suspect you are totally unaffected by this change. "Optional" does not mean unwanted. |
I went to high school with Ryan McElveen. He was obnoxious then and I find him no less obnoxious on the SB. |
Please, Please, be Peace Valley or just Valley HS. Please. The decision on the name change is water under the bridge. Moving forward, just pick a non-person name and it'll NEVER ever have to be changed again.
PEACE -- that's what this community and this process need right now. It's time for PEACE! That could be the rally cry. Peace Valley Volts Peace Valley Victors Peace Valley (Valley)cats Peace Valley Voyagers or Ventures Peace Valley Vipers Peace Valley Pathfinders Peace Valley Pintos Peace Valley Panthers Peace Valley Pugs Peace Valley Pythons/Pelicans Peace Valley Powers Peace Valley Purple ________ |
He has two degrees, speaks multiple languages, works for Brookings, travels frequently, and has a cute kid. Feeling a bit outclassed, perhaps? |
If by obnoxious you mean standing up for what is morally right, then I'm sure he'll gladly accept that label. |
Translation: it's fine to have lots of schools named after white men, but not blacks or Hispanics. That would just be SO divisive. |
I support this wholeheartedly. I voted for Marshall and Johns, but would be happy with Peace Valley if that is more palatable to the keepers than Marshall or Johns. As far as I'm concerned, this isn't about getting a specific name or type of name, it's about no longer honoring someone who fought to keep slavery, and also saying that the school board's decision in 1958 to actively participate in the active resistance movement by calling the school JEB Stuart HS instead of Munson Hill HS was wrong. If Peace Valley helps to lessen the rift between the two sides, that's a good choice. Hopefully the board will consider this when they pick a name. |
No, I'm doing quite well for myself, but thank you. I don't think he's a bad person, of course, and my comment wasn't intended to disparage his personal or professional life. I just happen to find his particular brand of liberalism gratuitous. |
Ok, saying he was obnoxious in high school and no less obnoxious now wasn't meant to disparage ![]() |
