I lived in Jerusalem when my husband worked for medicine de monde. I saw with my own eyes Israeli-Arabs ie Palestinians, getting spit on by a group of settlers for no reason. On my first full day mind you!
Israeli Arabs are treated like second class citizens with more property taxes and they don't have automatic Israeli citizenship either- not like someone newly arrived from say Russia! We were warned by Israelis to stay away from Ethiopian jews as well as Arabs. Unfortunately, I found it to be a segregated and racist country even among the Israelis themselves. Very sad considering it's supposed to be the only 'democracy' in the middle east and so forward. That's why someone like Desmond Tutu, who understands apartheid better than most, is against what the Israeli government is doing. Very tragic what is happening to the people of Gaza. Even more so that the international community isn't as outraged as much as they should be. |
Why would someone who is already a citizen subsequently need automatic citizenship? |
For instance, some of your family lives on the other side of the wall. |
Because Arabs living in Israel are given ID cards not Israel passports! Not all but most. They can't travel outside the country with that id card either unless they have another passport, so many palestinians will have a Jordanian passport but they are born and raised in Israel. Sounds very much like apartheid to me. And these are Arabs in Israel not the west bank. My American friend who married a Palestinian living in Israel was told to give up her US passport if she wanted Israeli citizenship. She said why should she if jews don't have too do that. This was in 2004, her and her husband are here in the US now. |
Who exactly in the "international community isn't as outraged as much as they should be"? Leaving aside the U.S., it seems like every international entity, from the U.N. on down has been, and continues to be, very critical of Israel. And virtually every European country (besides Germany) is solidly against Israel. It's just that Israel doesn't seem to care about this too much--but it probably doesn't have a choice, as it views these as existential matters. |
So you are trying to justify Israel's behavior? |
I simply don't know the facts about the passport matters regarding Palestinians or the extent to which Israeli Arab citizenship is not, actually, full citizenship. But as for Israel's fight against Hamas, I think that from Israel's standpoint, it is doing what it needs to do. And unfortunately for Hamas, Israel is achieving its objectives. |
Is this what israel needs to?

Israel needs to defend itself because no one in the world, except for the US, wants it to continue to exist (and that's hardly a universal opinion in the U.S.). However, no one would care one bit about the Middle East if oil was not involved. On another note, Israel should stop criticizing Sec. Kerry. That's just plain dumb and rude--criticizing your only ally.

Netanyahu is boxed in by the vile shitheads in his coalition.
Notwithstanding that he's a shithead himself, every day he has fewer options. That's the future that he has built for his country. |
Hamas disgusts me. |
You don't understand?? Or don't care to understand? ? Israel obviously treats some of their own citizens second class solely based on the fact they are ARABS Christian or Muslim it doesn't matter! Its an apartheid state period. So of course they hold no regard for any person man, woman or child of Gaza! And will continue to destroy them and any livelihood. So far have n included bombing churches, schools, mosques, hospitals, a zoo (seriously!?), schools and residential homes because of hamas rockets- whom former mayor Bloomberg of ny, after visiting, said pose no thread. Are you understanding things better now?? |
Tsk, tsk, such angry language. |
Most of the posters on this forum disgust me. You are a bright spot. |
They seem to be using more targeted strikes now, after Hamas broke the latest cease fire. (Source: NY Times.) |
