This age discrepancy due to "redshirting" is ridiculous

Of course, you can. Everybody should do their research and do what's best for their families, knowing that there are pros and cons to any decision. It helps to hear from parents of older children who have seen how those decisions work out over the long term, especially when this is the first child the family is sending to school.

I taught K and 1 back in the day. Worksheets are fine for practice and busy work--but they really do not prove anything and they seldom teach anything.

This is why I love Montessori. Kids progress at their own pace in a developmentally-appropriate environment in a mixed age classroom. They can be doing long division by the time they're 6, or they can be reading chapter books, or neither or both. There is no artificial list of skills every child must have by a certain age. Then they can move to a mixed-age elementary classroom at age 6 and continue to develop on whatever path they're on. Research has shown that there is a wide range of normal in reaching academic milestones before age 9 or so, so the Montessori model best reflects the actual reality of children's cognitive development. It is a national tragedy that most schools are so out of sync with reality.

School starts beginning of September so anyone born between 9/2-9/30 is STARTING K at 4 years old, not 5. If they want a 'solid 5' the cut-off---why not make the day you have to be '5' September 1st?

Do you really think it matters if a child as 4 years and 28 days on day 1 or 5 years and 2 days? Whever the deadlines is there will always be someone just before or just after and there will always be parents who think there child is ready to go early and parents who think there child is better off waiting.

The cut off in MoCo 1999 was January 1st.

I only know this because my som was born in December of that year and I thought, I would probably redshirt. But by the time he wrent to K the cut off was either Oct or November.. They moved it back a month every year until it was sept 1st.

Nope! 5 is a solid number. Just like you vote at 17, drive at 16, legally drink at 21. 5 by K makes sense.

So in your world, we should move the date back and anyone can still redshirt but no one can start ahead? Tell that to the Montgomery County families who test in Sept. and Oct. They have flexibility on both sides of their cutoff which is what is missing with FCPS.
