This age discrepancy due to "redshirting" is ridiculous

Not to brag, but he's a very talented athlete in many different sports and he's also tall and solidly built. I have parents from the other teams we play asking me ALL THE TIME if I kept him back.

He's usually the YOUNGEST on the field/court.

SMH.

If we had kept him back I could not imagine him playing against kids up to 2 years younger than him. It wouldn't be fair.

What kind of league does your son play in that allows kids to play by grade? Most youth sports go by age.

Yes, a late September child would turn 13 in 7th as will October-May/June kids. 7th grader turning 14 is a rarity. Just as a child turning 12 in late September - May/June is a rarity. Most kids TURN 13 at some point during the school year!

FWIW I have an April birthday and graduated HS when I was 18. I began KG when I was 5.

My late September child began KG at 5 and will graduate at 18.

Please give me an example of a child graduating at 19! Are people red shirting August and September? Yep. July? Sometimes. But Jan-June? Never!!

I know of two boys with February birthdays who were redshirted. I admit, I think they're nuts. But they're not that unusual, here in Fairfax.

FEBRUARY?? Some issue for sure!! Highly unusual, indeed!!!

17:16, this is 17:13 answering your question. The kid who will turn 15 in 2016 in the 8th grade has a March bday. March. Not June. In March of 2017, in 9th grade, he will be able to get his license to drive.

Do u know why he was held?

We are in Arlington.

What sport does Arlington have that goes by grade? That is highly unusual anywhere around here.

Soccer- I know a boy who stayed back a year and is now in 4th grade. My son played him this October. He turned 11 in November. They supposedly check birth certificates but who knows?

There's a kid on my son's basketball team who tuned 10 in June who is a 4th grader. My son turned 9 in July.

Yes. But there aren't many September birthdays when you figure there are 11 other months.

Our DC is late September. We decided to have her start KG when she was 5 not 4. Hasn't been an issue as the one of her classmates turned 6 on October 1 of KG and the June baby also turned 6 during KG! Si, they all began KG at 5!!!!

Birthdays are not arranged evenly through all 12 months. August and September are the most common birth months, usually.

Maybe there was some sense to the old late fall cut offs. Births are disproportionately concentratef in July thru September. Why not have the most clustered births as a cohort? It gave the teachers a concentrated core of similar birth dates. Hmm.

Kids don't necessarily have the same maturity levels just because they are born within the same few weeks or months. Kids born even on the same day can have wildly different maturity levels. Parents just have to do what's right for their own kids, since every child is different.

Yes yes but...the most likely indicator of similar maturity levels remains age. It is a bit odd to pick the time of year when so many kids ae born and the split 2nd vs. 3rd grade right in the middle of that concentration of birthdays.

This. Our DD and her friend have the exact same fall birthday. Ours started school on time at 4 and the friend was redshirted. Both are out of HS now and it was the right decision for each girl. Ours would have been miserable if she had been redshirted and her friend would have struggled greatly if she had started on time.
