No 7 year old is a KG. An obvious typo! You may have a just turned 6, though.
FWIW I have an April birthday and graduated HS when I was 18. I began KG when I was 5. My late September child began KG at 5 and will graduate at 18. Please give me an example of a child graduating at 19! Are people red shirting August and September? Yep. July? Sometimes. But Jan-June? Never!! |
There is a child in my DC's class who is 2 yrs older than my child, May birthday. The child turned 9 in 2nd grade. My child was still 7. So, yes, it does happen. |
|
Is the child disabled? Autistic?
It's is exceptional to hold back October, November, December, January, February, March, April, or May! You DO realize this, yes?? |
|
PP,
If a May birthday KG at 6 1st at 7 2nd at 8-last month of school child would be 9. When is your child birthday? |
I taught a student who graduated at 20 last year. Yes, he was clearly on the spectrum (the parents refused to admit this). |
There were 2 kids in my son's K class who were 7, but they were not redshirted. Unfortunately, they had missed too many days of K to move on to 1st grade. It seemed like maybe they had some issues at home. It was probably necessary for them to do K again in order to make up the work that they had missed. They were nice kids and I don't feel that the rest of the class suffered any adverse effects from them being there for another year. |

KG is NOT mandatory in VA. In fact, Schools can't force a holdback! Parents may have been misinformed or uninformed. VA is a parents rights state, so parents MUST agree!
|
Point made. Disabled children are exceptional. |
| We have since switched schools, but at our former school there was a boy who turned two years older than our child when they had a birthday during the school year. He will graduate from HS at 19. He will turn 16 in 9th grade. |
| What month? June??? Come on folks, really? There are THAT many 19 year lids in the fall and winter and spring? Ugh! |
I know of two boys with February birthdays who were redshirted. I admit, I think they're nuts. But they're not that unusual, here in Fairfax. |
| ^^^ I think their parents are nuts, not the boys. |

I have a July birthday boy. He DID NOT stay back.
Not to brag, but he's a very talented athlete in many different sports and he's also tall and solidly built. I have parents from the other teams we play asking me ALL THE TIME if I kept him back. He's usually the YOUNGEST on the field/court. SMH. If we had kept him back I could not imagine him playing against kids up to 2 years younger than him. It wouldn't be fair. |
What are you even trying to say other than to brag about your son? |
You're wrong. My son is in 7th grade. He's 12. Children in his class have begun turning 14. Most of the Sept-Mar birthdays are going to be kids turning 13, but there are also the occasional children turning 14 years old. |
