Just as a programmer? That seems quite high for that kind of role, no? Are you dumbing your title down a bit? |

No. But some companies realize that a really good programmer is easily 10x more productive than an average programmer. It's a no brainer. They're just hard to find. Of course, it's a different calculus if you're just billing bodies to the government. |
For a programmer? All the ones I know make about $120K. Granted the ones I know seem pretty unremarkable. |

A rockstar that can handle being a team lead/PM on minor projects AND produce code like he didn't have those side things could be making $170k. Or, (s)he could be an admin/manager/app programmer for something really specialized like PeopleSoft.
I am a sysadmin. I've ended up playing a role in just about everything that goes on in my shop. Basically at any job I've been at, folks have figured out I figure stuff out on my own and leave them alone as I learn it. In the past month, I've had to handle Red Hat, FreeBSD, Windows 03/08/7, VMware ESXi (and VDI), and I've had to play with dedicated security appliances. I haven't gotten many certifications -- I've no interest in coughing up $3k and taking a week of leave to take a certification class. I did get a Security+ cert since the class was at my site and I work at a SOC. I have no interest in becoming management, not even a team lead. That means I have to sit through meetings. I'm paid a shade less than 100k. I'm just a high-tech plumber. |
