I agree. And frankly, what isn't stated on here but I have seen IRL is that most of the people with the high salaries got there partly because they knew someone. So while some may look at this thread as a guide for what kind of job to pursue for high pay, I think it's misleading. In my own life, I've seem very sub-par people who make high salaries. It took a while for me to realize that most of those people had some sort of foot in the door (a relative, a friend, they made the right contact at the right time). A more interesting and telling thread would be one devoted to, how did you REALLY get to your current salary/job. |

I'm a legal assistant (for the past 15 years). I make $61,000/year before taxes.
DH is a dog walker / cat sitter. he makes about $140,000/year before taxes |
Oops, forgot, I'm 38, husband is 31 |
I think this is correct to a certain extent. It has been my personal experience that contacts are important but more important are advocates and mentors who can vouch for your work. So it's not just having a network to get a foot in the door, but a network of mentors that really support your career. In most "big-jobs" in the private sector anyway, you can't maintain unless you perform. And it doesn't necessarily take traditional smarts to succeed. I don't have any problems with people succeeding because they are charismatic vs. book smart. |

36 year old male. Partner in real estate investment company. My base salary is $250k/year, but I average $300k-350k annual income.
Needless to say when I bought my current house (cost $890k) I had a lot of looks from neighbors who were 2x my age but living in townhouses. |
No way. 45-50 hours a week is not normal work week in public. For you to be making 210K you must be experienced senior manager or newer director. . after 7 years in public, as a manager I make 101K. |
No student loans needed for dog walking. Better choice than Manager. |
Rock on, dog walker. |
Yeah, seriously. Rock. On. How man dogs does your husband walk, or does he own his own dog walking business? |
Wow! Nice work! |

I work in PR. I switched to the dark side after pursuing a dream of journalism, getting my first real reporting gig, and deciding that was enough, I wanted money.
For journalists looking to make the jump, not all PR is about selling your soul to corporate America (although those jobs pay better). I work in public affairs/policy-oriented PR. You get to push good causes AND make money. |
| PP here. meant to say age 32, 93k + bonus, just a bachelor's. |
