These are the courses where it makes sense for a US student looking at t20-t40 schools (OOS or Privates since In-state should not be a comparison) to focus on. Specially if you look for double honors programs that might be difficult to implement at a US school at that level.

This was our family this year. DD’s best school was NYU full pay. She got into 4 other top 50 schools. 2 were OOS tuition.
She wanted to study Economics and Politics. St Andrews just made a lot of sense given the price and ability to double honors in Economics and IR, two of the better ranked StA programs.

Parent of rising jr here who is starting to explore uk schools alongside his us targets.

Besides IR, what are the most popular majors for Americans at St Andrews?

History, Classics, Management, Econ, Biology and Psychology.

IR is by far the most popular with Americans. The business related programs (Econ, Financial Econ and Management) alongside History,Psychology and Film Studies are also popular.

Some interesting Stats for those who care:

Number of Enrolled students from the US:

2021: 384
2022: 524
2023: 471

NY and CA have on avg 1/3 of the US enrollment (about 50/50 between both states)
VA, TX, NJ, MA and CT account for roughly another 1/3. (Almost evenly divided with CT a little ahead of the avg).

But the one interesting stat is to look for which of these states outperforms their offers.
For example, California averaged 15.3% of the total US applications over the 3 year period, but accounted for 16% of the offers.
Besides California, Connecticut, MA and VA outperformed their applications.
The other ones (NY, TX, NJ) all underperformed.

Another interesting find is that in 2023 almost 50% of those getting offers from Connecticut end up enrolling.
The numbers for every other state is about 33% for 2023. Wonder why CT is so ahead of the game here with enrollment?

Considering St Andrews concentrate their US efforts in NY and California these findings are not surprising. Also not surprising that the vast majority of placements in the US are in NY and CA, with DC, Chicago and Dallas a distant 3rd, 4th and 5th.

Are those numbers for 1st Year Classes only? Wow…

Yes. Typically about 20% of the incoming class is Americans.

Does St Andrews offer scholarship for “performance”team members? I saw that their Girls football (soccer) team, which is 50% Americans, just won the BUCS national championship. Are there scholarships available for these athletes?
Anonymous
Yes. For Basketball (Women), Football/Soccer (Women), Golf, Field Hockey (Women), Netball, Rowing, Rugby (Men) and Tennis.

You better be at the top here. For a girl, simply playing soccer for a MLS academy wont cut it…You have to be the top player of the academy.

Unsurprising that they’ve even taken on athletic recruits. Natives must be frustrated when their children aren’t receiving offers these days.

Nothing for natives to be frustrated about when it comes to athletic scholarships….if you are good, you are good regardless of nationality. That is the most merit thing there is. no holistic approach to sports merit sorry.

Same thing happens here on Olympic sports…have you ever seen the roster of the top US Swimming teams? Tons of foreigners…

Disappointing to hear that any UK college has athletic scholarships...

What is disappointing about it? Even Cambridge offers this:

We just toured St Andrews and several other universities in the UK. We were very impressed with the attention we received from Staff. They roll out the red carpet. It was similar at Oxford. None of the other schools presented themselves in the same way. My son is applying to 5 in the fall and he has now included St Andrews in his list after the tour and removed Warwick.

What a wonderful little town. He had two aha moments during all of these tours. One at Oxford and one at St Andrews. He had that “feeling” that he could see himself at either school that was different from the others we toured.

has any American here been able to get in directly into their 2nd year?

What is the process like?
