U.S. producers can also raise prices because their competitors have had to raise prices. |
Trump knows his voters aren't the sharpest tools in the shed. |
I'm done with the US. Unbelievable story in the NYT.
"In a late-night social media post, the president said he would impose “large scale” tariffs if Canada and the European Union allied to “do economic harm” to America." So now you think you can not only rip up trade agreements where companies and my country have invested billions but you can tell Canada that we can't find new trading alliances and must live in poverty? What the eff is wrong with your country? You have zero checks and balances. Half your country believes all the lies he spews and actively hates us and the other half is completely silent. Germany in the 1930s. |
We’re not completely silent. Some of us write our congressmen, protest, support candidates that aren’t like this, canvass, etc. please don’t lump us into one group. |
NP. But not nearly enough people. The protests are still thin and most liberal people seem scared to participate in them or even acknowledge the scale of the damage to our democracy. |
Weak. |
It is cars and car parts. So not just finished cars. |
So won't this help climate change? |
Even Tesler: https://www.newsweek.com/elon-musk-trump-car-tariff-hit-tesla-costs-parts-not-trivial-2051288?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=Threads#Echobox=1743076192 |
It actually won't. It will encourage people to keep old, used cars for longer periods of time. They will be unsafe and more polluting relative to newer cars. Not a joke - if you keep these tariffs on for decades, the American roads will start to look like Cuba. Old cars from the 1990s and 2000s being constantly fixed by poorer Americans who can't afford $50-80K for a new minivan, SUV, or truck. |
You are wrong. The tariffs include all car parts. On average, a car assembled in the US includes 50 percent of parts that are manufactured abroad, mostly in Canada and Mexico. These tariffs are also devastating for GM and Ford. It is baffling to me why Republicans are so determined to destroy the US economy and raise prices on everything. |
This is the norm in most developing countries. I noticed it in the Bahamas that most people were driving around early 2000s beaters. |
That's because they are on an island and it costs $$$$ to bring a car on the island between shipping fees and government taxes/tariffs. So they import used cars from the U.S. that are 10 years old and have 130,000 miles that are cheap to acquire (but still expensive to import). |
It’s awful. I’m sorry. How do you think we feel? We are stuck here. Years of misinformation have done this; social media has sped it up. Most Americans are distressed, others are closing their eyes and ears. What happened in the USA can happen anywhere. All it takes is simmering resentments and a leader with equal part evil and “charm.” |
I will marching on April 5th! I'm also going out of my way to buy Canadian goods! More than half of us did not vote for this! |
