Every recession since the 1950s has happened during the Republican presidency. Republicans are great at marketing because they have the American public thinking. They are amazing at budgeting and all things being fiscally conservative. When in reality they tank the economy every time they get in office. So they're billionaire friends can make more money and then Democrats spend the next term digging out of the hole only for us to go back in. At least this time will probably never have another Democratic president, so maybe people will finally wake up that Republicans have been the evil masterminds all along |
I don't know if "just lie about everything and court the dumbest quartile of Americans as your voter base" means they're "amazing at marketing." Anyone can do that, you just have to have zero morals or integrity. |
Excellent read. The tariffs are part of a bigger master plan by Trump, Bessent, and Miran to rejigger the global economy:
https://unherd.com/2025/02/why-trumps-tariffs-are-a-masterplan/ However, the plan is fraught with risk and has a high likelihood of blowing up in their faces. |
They've already destroyed the most important part, trust. If they want to change the way that American security is valued by other countries, they've already wrecked that because Europe, the UK and Australia are moving away from American security and military might. Oops. Now they're just wrecking our economy fruitlessly. |
Interesting. But it’s not the 1950s anymore. Today we are consumers for low quality goods from China and services that we mostly provide so I don’t see that we have the leverage Miran seems to assume. And a recession will only reduce that leverage. It’s also clear that our trading partners are furious and already retaliating. And graded tariffs for military protection assumes a correlation between a trade relationship and our national security. |
The only way for Trump to enact this plan is to never have elections again. American voters will not abide by rapid tariff-induced inflation. Americans - especially voting Boomers - are fat and comfortable. The effort to onshore manufacturing will take 10-15 years. The only real effect I see from Trump et al grand plan is to cede the global economy to China. Relative to the U.S., China looks incredibly stable. And when you look at everything through that prism - “What’s best for China?” - Trump and the GOP’s erratic behavior toward allies and the economy start to make more sense. |
Absolutely we will (not me though, I bought a car in late November to avoid this sh!t.) The 25% tariffs are on FINISHED cars and trucks that are shipped into the United States. This includes American brands. About 45% of the vehicles sold in the United States are imported. |
This is going to drive up the used car market as well. |
Yes it will. How does he think Americans don't pay these tariffs? |
Trump thinks Americans won’t understand that his tariffs are new taxes. In effect a sales tax on all imported goods. And since the U.S. doesn’t produce much, a sales tax on almost everything. |
