It won’t do anything. Most of the recent issues stem from USAO declining to prosecute and federal judges letting arrested criminals run free + hamstringing the police/prosecutors.

Our councilmembers are elected to represent us. They should be relentless about pushing got this to change, not just wash their hands and say “not my fault.”

The mayor reported to the Council annually that the majority of felonies and gun crimes were not being prosecuted as of 2018. None of them went to the media, asked the Congressional Committee with Oversight over DOJ to hold hearings, asked the Congressional Committee with Oversight over DC to hold hearings, oh, held hearings before DC Council and got media attention, nada. It wasn't until an anonymous Twitter account/substack published the public numbers and the WP picked it up that Congress on its own held hearings. Graves does dial up the rate when under Congressional or public pressure, then it drops again.

Mendelson, Nadeau and Allen have all said there is a crime crisis. Are they MAGA now or did you forget your meds? Or are you a DCJL troll?

The data by year certainly seems to link back to legislative and policy changes by the DC Council.

And a change in who became responsible for federal oversight in DC (and stopped doing that part of the job).

Exactly. At the last public safety meeting I attended the councilmember and staff had tons of possibly valid finger pointing. Ok you've identified the problem. Now advocate instead of admiring the problem.

Hey Ward 1, get ready for your walkable neighborhood to possibly have little retail

Local media seems to finally be stepping up and doing more comprehensive crime stories, which may motivate some long term Congressional oversight over DOJ/USAO.

I was glad they reported so much on the poor college girl murdered in Friendship Heights, that often seems to up the odds of an arrest, as did happen.

That vending law by Nadeau should be repealed. Otherwise Columbia Heights will trend back to the food/retail desert it once was.

They ALL do it, Bowser, Council, USAO, etc. WHO is benefiting from the status quo? It's not the citizens.

Some recent legislation needs to be reconsidered

Mendelson is the worst for whining and not taking responsibility. Nadeau, Allen and JLG put it right out on social media.

And where was he for the joint press conference of shame with Bowser about the teams moving to VA? He was in all the meetings with her and according to Charles Allen, did not keep his colleagues informed whatsoever. Weak little man could not even be bothered to show his face. I once gave his campaign a small amount of money. Seeing the trajectory of his public service, I regret it.

Not everyone thinks the status quo is fine. When enough of them move, taking tax dollars, the $ for bike lanes and pickleball may be impacted.

Even in the 90s, the tax base of the city - basically W 3 and downtown during business hours, was somewhat insulated from crime. Now people are being robbed at gunpoint outside Wegmans at City Ridge in daylight and posh restaurants on The Wharf are sprayed with gunfire. What exactly is the plan to keep the tax money flowing?

How can anyone read this and think, yep, what we need is more of the same?!

Nice to see the USAO prosecuting, hope the judge is not a former public defender. Props to the MPD officer as well.

We also need some changes to the laws. Does anyone but Pinto support the changes USA Graves says are needed to get gun criminals off the street, especially in light of the recent December COA decision?
