No, they shouldn’t.

+1. It may sound good but I don't want some yahoo deciding what their kids can and can't read. That affects my kids too. If they don't like these books, they can always opt out.

"Yahoo?" How about we insert the words "trans" media specialist? Would you be okay with that person making decisions?

Yes.

My daughter was forced to read a Boy Named Penelope and we don't agree with the viewpoints expressed in that book. I think it's dangerous for MCPS to take a stance on gender theory. None of this stuff is settled and we are very much in the throes of a societal debate about it, so people acting like people who disagree are neanderthals are wrong. There's lots of room for shades of gray here, but the activists won't allow it.

I think they are opting for the inclusivity of ALL of their students. The religious right doesn't get to decide for everyone any more and they are having a hissy fit about it.

They are not opting for the inclusivity of ALL of their students because Muslim parents are TELLING you these books and teachings about LGBTQ sexual norms and family structures VIOLATE their faith. They're not the only ones who this applies to.

You can't say you're inclusive for all when a significant chunk of students, who are Muslim or more conservative Christian, tell you this violates their faith. You're choosing to offend some to please others. And that's fine. But that's NOT inclusive and is the opposite of that.

I'm going to the church of the spaghetti monster and stupidity greatly offends me. I think we should have it banned. Does anyone want to join me in the class action against stupidity?

1. Get your church recognized as a church

2. File a lawsuit and try your luck

1. That is a church

2. They are both very litigious and very successful in their litigation.

Then may the best church win.

HOw about we keep religion out of schools altogether? Instill those values at home if you wish, but I don't care what religious sensibilities the curriculum is offending.

I think we could all get behind that if you would admit that your efforts to promote certain social and environmental agendas were also a religion (see definition of "dogma").

What you view as "promoting as certain social and environmental agendas" the rest of us view as acknowledging that these kids exists, allowing them to exist and including them instead of stuffing our head in the sand and hiding behind religion in order to bully these kids into depression and suicide. Someone's mare existence is not "dogma."

Gay and trans kids don't exist. Kids haven't gone through puberty and don't know who they are attracted to. Understanding your gender is a developmental step that most grasp at much earlier ages. Apparently some are either delayed or have parents with Munchausen by Proxy. In either case, they need help to escape either their own delusion or their parent's, not celebration.

I had started puberty and knew who I was attracted to by fifth grade. I wasn't even halfway through my schooling then.

Ok well the lawsuit is dealing with material given to children younger than 5th grade. My second grader knows that some people are gay (we have gay friends) but there is no need to personally reflect on sexuality at age 7.

So at what age do you start to teach kids about sexuality. Or are you one of those people who waits until puberty to tell kids about basic human reproduction?

Does a kids book with a mom and dad inherently teach kids about sexuality?

You can depict gay people without getting into sex. Get your mind out of the gutter.

Favoring one group over other is always based on who makes to more noise. Gay lobby is miniscule population but overtaken the MCPS with their noise making ability.

They are not "favoring" a group. They are broadening the spectrum of people represented in the available books.

Book about child and parent who go to Fourth of July parade? Book about child who's upset because her favorite uncle is marrying a woman? Book about prince who goes on a quest and meets his true love, a princess? Fine!

Book about child and parent who go to Pride parade? Book about child who's upset because her favorite uncle is marrying a man? Book about prince who goes on a quest and meets his true love, a knight? Intolerable favoritism!

The majority of books reflect heterosexuality with characters having a mother and father or a a woman falling in love with a man

I just hope they get strapped with the court costs. I hate to think tax dollars are subsidizing bigotry.

Who want to opt out of what, exactly? Reading books in school?

Yes. Put them in the school library. Don’t make them part of lesson plans, though. If they are, kids should be allowed to opt out.

It sounds like you would be happier in Virginia. Although even in VA, they only notify parents if books contain sexual content, and the existence of trans characters does not meet the criteria for sexual content.

Is Virginia more tolerant than here? Of different religious beliefs? Then maybe I should. MoCo wants everyone to think the same and there is absolutely zero room for diversity of thought.

The state-sanctioned intolerance in VA might align better with your personal intolerance. Although, again, the state law is just about notifying parents of sexual content in books (for now).

There was a whole group in another forum that thought parents kissing kids on the lips was abusive and disgusting. Lots of people can't take sex out of anything.

Unfortunately, I don't think court costs are a concern for MCPS. A post last year said the Montgomery County Council provides MCPS a nearly bottomless pit of attorney funding (11M?) that doesn't appear as part of their budget. This is the primary reason why I was opposed to any MCPS funding increases. I'm not against specifically funding teacher salaries or renovations, but MCPS has a history of (imho) wasting millions on pet projects, legal fees, and funding of questionable programs as to why they're so expensive or whether there was a better approach that cost less money (Leader in Me, Equity Training, Communications Office, Racism Study, Kid Museum, Electric Buses, ESSER III, bocce ball, etc.). I do question whether Montgomery County has sufficient financial accountability of MCPS and would personally welcome a detailed audit of their books.

DP. Even if MCPS had all the money in the world, I would still want the plaintiffs to lose and get stuck with the court costs.

My kids loved bocce. That was the best money ever spent!

If only you had a child.

I don't know what the big deal is about what books are being taught in MCPS. Half the kids can't read anyway, so what does it matter?
