That was a shooting on the train not at the station but yeah … point taken.

I lived there in the ‘90s and it was much worse. But that doesn’t mean today’s level of crime is ok and should be tolerated.

Posts about the 11 year-old who was arrested by MPD for his involvement in 3 armed robberies, and covered by WTOP ?

- those should be deleted. Nothing to see. Move along. Most feel safe in their neighborhoods.

Wait - WHAT?!?

This can’t be real

Yup it is, oh and the Post had an update today about the 12 year old who had previously been arrested on 9 carjackings, robberies, etc. He had for some reason been placed in a shelter house and not held at the juvie detention center and wait for it….he fled the insecure shelter and is at large. Yay DC and progressive criminal justice policies!

You can’t ethically just throw a 12 yo into prison. Get real. That kid needs help and not just empty punishment. 12!

A 12 year old who has racked up 9 violent offenses cannot just be left to run the streets and victimize more people. He absolutely should have been in a secure juvenile detention facility. No one said he should have been placed in an adult prison.

+1. He needs to be held. In a secure place. Where he can't hurt anyone else. Releasing him to the parenting that led to this behavior, or trusting him to remain where he's supposed to be at an unsecure facility, are idiotic. You can offer the discipline and education at the secure facility. He's not getting it at home and he's almost certainly not actually voluntarily going to school.

He wasn’t “just left” to roam the streets, he ran away from a shelter. There is no simple fix for this situation.

That he ran from a shelter tells me he should have been at a detention facility. Hopefully he doesn’t commit more crimes and hurt more people while out on the run

He needs to be in a secure lock down juvenile facility with access to education and trade school.

Wait - WHAT?!?

My 12 year old son is 5 ft 9 and 160 pounds, making him larger than many men. You think a kid that size should be free to roam around attacking people?

This can’t be real

Ahhh, there is. It's called jail.

Nobody said he should have been thrown into a prison. He should be in a youth detention facility, where he can be separated from the bad influences and probable neglect of his current environment. A youth detention facility will have educational programs, healthcare, mentoring, etc.--he's not just sitting in a cell to rot.

Of course there's a simple fix! You don't move him from the secure facility to the less secure facility, not with that kind of background. Most juvenile systems have two options when kids aren't released to their parents -- less secure facility, which is exactly what it sounds like (you aren't supposed to walk out, but the doors aren't locked and no one will stop you) and a secure facility (doors are locked).

With all the teenage crime of late, I'm wondering why DPR has scheduled a hype night at the Hearst Pool tomorrow night. Sounds like a bad idea. I hope there will be chaperones or cops to deal with potentially unruly crowds.

Unruly crowds in Cleveland Park?

But we are increasingly uncomfortable with the level of unchecked crime happening in the city and the hopelessness we feel about things getting better.

I know things have been a lot worse in the city in the past. But each year, we seem to be going further backwards. Neighborhood stores are closing because they can't operate with this level of crime. There are shootings and car jackings in our neighborhood, where that was unheard of before. I drive by cars everyday up on blocks because the wheels were stolen. And I have a constant feeling of "wtf" because Bowser and the Council seem to either not care or not have a realistic plan to fix it.

When is it time to call it quits?

Now. DC is gonna become the next San Francisco. Get out ASAP. I’m an immigrant and with the way this country is going I’m honesty considering moving back home.

Not OP but the problem for me is that I don't agree this is true. Everything is a trade off. Sure, I can move somewhere with a lot less crime, but add an hour to my commute daily and lose the same sense of community I have where I am. I like that I can walk/bike most places now -- easy incidental exercise, better for the environment, better for my mental health. Losing that isn't a small thing to me.

There are townships with their own school pyramid and police force. They don’t have this problem at all. Even when in or near urban areas with crime and delinquency in the schools.

Which are extremely segregated, have super high taxes are in boring, insular areas.

I'll take boring and insular over having to fear that my five-year-old son will be hit by a stray bullet. I'll also take boring and insular over living in a city that is ruled by roving bands of teens wearing balaclavas. Nothing else matters if you don't feel safe when you leave your house.

+1. There is nothing cool enough in DC that would entice me to risk the lives of my children. I just don't understand it.

This. DC isn’t that great if a city and isn’t a real city. Maybe if it were Paris, London, New York, Tokyo, Rome, or Hong Kong, it would still be worth living there. But DC? Naaaa

Baby K cannot be charged as an adult in DC, despite shooting a woman point blank in the face in DC days after he invaded a school bus to attempt to execute a middle-schooler. The DC murder was most likely linked to the attempted school bus assassination, possibly retaliating against a witness. But he is “just a kid”.

Fortunately PG County has him and he is charged as an adult there and being detained.

I wonder if the feds can charge him in MD for the retaliation slaying across state lines related to the MD crime.
