VHSL 6A Boys 2023 Rankings and Results

Outside of the top three (Yorktown, Madison, LB) everything is a bit of a muddle. It is really hard to say how spots 4-8 end up shaking out.

Battlefield and Robo switch spots. That’s it.

Week of April 24 -2023 VA Boys 6A Rankings

1. Yorktown (9-1)

Last Week: Def. Herndon 16-7, Def. Patriot 11-6

Analysis: Yorktown beat Herndon easily but got a bit of test from Patriot with the score 7-5 into the third quarter. Yorktown turned it up in the second half and put things away, limiting the Pioneers to just on second half goal. Huge week ahead, when the Patriots face the top two challengers in the Liberty district in Langley and McLean. Can anyone topple the king of the hill? Our money is on Yorktown, but hopefully we get two good games.

This Week: Langley (4/25), McLean (4/28)

2. Madison (8-2)

Last Week: Def. Centreville 15-4, Lost to Landon 7-3, Def. Woodson 18-3

Analysis: Madison won the games they were supposed to win, and won them handily. We don’t punish them for testing themselves against one of the top privates in the area, something that some of their rivals weren’t willing to do, and they put up a good fight. Interesting matchup with Oakton tomorrow night. Oakton gave Lake Braddock a tough game and will be looking to take the next step against one of the power-four. The Warhawks cap the busy week off with a big game against resurgent Battlefield.

This Week: Oakton (4/24), South Lakes (4/27), Battlefield (4/29)

3. Lake Braddock (10-1)

Last Week: Def. Fairfax 17-5

Analysis: Easy win against Fairfax keeps the Bruins in the three spot, but can they hold on? Huge matchup under the Friday night lights with archrival Robinson is the game of the week. This game will decide the Patriot district regular season champion and first-place seed for the district tournament.

This Week: Woodson (4/25), Robinson (4/28)

4. Battlefield (6-3)

Last Week: Def. Unity Reed 15-0, Osbourn Park 21-1, Lost to Robinson (4/22)

Analysis: The Bobcats are back, as they take out traditional power Robinson on Saturday. Busy week ahead with an easy start against Gainesville, a match with district challenger John Champe, and a Saturday showdown with Madison. Battlefield likely needs to win two and have a good showing against Madison to hold the spot. A win against Madison would really shake things up.

This Week: Gainesville (4/24), John Champe (4/27), Madison (4/29)

5. McLean (11-1)

Last Week: Def. Marshall 16-0

Analysis: The Highlanders routed Marshall and earn a well-deserved long break. Hopefully ten days off is not too much, as they come back to face #1 seed Yorktown in a game that could be for the Liberty district regular season championship. McLean hasn’t beaten Yorktown in many years but this is their best team in recent memory and this could be their chance. Potentially overrated at number 5, and they need a good showing against Yorktown to keep this spot and show that they are a real contender.

This Week: Yorktown (4/28)

6. Robinson (7-3)

Last Week: Def. West Potomac 16-5, Lost to Battlefield 10-7

Analysis: The Rams lost a stunner to Battlefield on Saturday night, failing to get their offense in gear against the Bobcats' stingy defense. No rest for Robinson, as they play four games in five days next week. Fairfax should be easy. Dominion is a 5A power but Yorktown crushed them and we expect Robinson to do the same. Then the battle for the Patriot district belt against Lake Braddock on Friday night. We think Robinson may be better than McLean, but they will have to beat Lake Braddock to rejoin the Top 5.

This Week: Fairfax (4/25), Dominion (4/26), Lake Braddock (4/28), Chantilly (4/29)

7. Langley (6-2)

Last Week: Def. Washington-Liberty 20-2

Analysis: Langley cruised to victory against Washington-Liberty and the offense seems to be clicking finally. Huge game on Tuesday against Yorktown. Langley stole a regular season win last year but then got routed in the district playoffs. Can they steal another one this season?

This Week: Yorktown (4/25)

8. Oakton (5-4)

Last Week: Def. Westfield 12-3, Def. West Potomac 9-8

Analysis: Quality win against Westfield, followed by a surprisingly close win over West Potomac. Tough week ahead with Madison up first, followed by a game with Centreville that could be testy, and finishing with an easier game with Colgan. Oakton likely needs two wins and a decent showing against Madison to hold their spot.

This Week: Madison (4/24), Centreville (4/27), Colgan (4/29)

9. Freedom South Riding (8-3)

Last Week: Def. Osbourn 23-1, Def. Broad Run 10-8

Analysis: Freedom pounded Osbourn but barely escaped with a win against 0-7 Broad Run (although Broad Run is better than their record suggests). An easy week ahead with a single game against 0-9 Unity Reed. Maybe John Champe can give them a loss in their season-ender in May, but we are not so sure. Freedom beat Patriot head-to-head and is the second-best team in Region B until proven otherwise.

This Week: Unity Reed (4/24)

10. Patriot (4-4)

Last Week: Def. Osbourn Park 19-2, Lost to Yorktown 11-6

Analysis: Easy win over OP, and a closer than expected game against Yorktown, with Patriot keeping the game to 7-5 at half before fading away. Despite the loss, Patriot still looks like a team that can hang with the bottom half of the top ten, and the rest of the contenders faded away with West Potomac losing three in a row, Westfield getting crushed by Oakton, and South County sporting a losing record (plus we still don’t trust Cosby or newcomer Kellam). The Stallions would knock the Pioneers out of this spot with a win on Saturday.

This Week: Osbourn (4/24), Gainesville (4/27), South County (4/29)

Honorable Mention: Cosby, Kellam, South County, West Potomac, Westfield

Only one big mistake I see here, Dominion is not a 5a power, as they are a 4a team.

Madison 13 Oakton 4

WOW...I thought this game would be much closer than this. I was expecting Madison to win but by 3-4 goals not 9

Me too. Madison totally dominated on both ends of the field. They look pretty sharp now.

Yes, Dominion is 4A. Editors asleep at the wheel again. Dominion is a 4A contender but will have a tough time getting past Atlee.

The three goals in the final minute of 1st were brutal.

Atlee is really good (handled Riverside with ease earlier this month) and will be for a couple of more years at least. They'll keep the 4 title out of NoVa hands (unlike divisions 5 and 6).

Lighten up Francis.

I believe Champe(6a) is moving to 4a next year, so that will add a new dimension to the 4a outlook in NOVA, as well as shake up the Battlefield/ Patriot/ Freedom/ Champe dynamic on that side of 6a.

Using Riverside as a judge of Atlee is doing a disservice to Atlee. Riverside is already showing cracks and MAY be passed by Briar this year and others next year in 5a.

Why don't you just create a topic for 4a/5a? No one on this thread is interested in your dribble.
