Masks optional by spring break

She’s a different person, withdrawn and not as responsive. Experts agree this is terrible for kids psychologically.

I care deeply about my kids who’ve suffered enough. Kindergartners shouldn’t have been masked in the first place in my (unpopular) opinion. But now that we have vaccines! Hospitalizations are low. Cases numbers are declining. Let’s do this! Other children can still mask if they want to.

1800 Americans died yesterday.

I’m not masking my fully vaccinated child to protect the unvaccinated in other parts of the country. The immunodeficient people have the vaccine, boosters, n95s. The situation won’t change for them and my child should not bear the burden.

Thank you for saying that. My sentiments, exactly. I don't care at all whether others choose to get the vaccine or not, but none of us should have to keep masking to protect those who choose not to get the shot. It's time to move forward. We are one of only a few jurisdictions across the country that are still masking.

This. Why are we so behind the curve here in MoCo? One of the last districts to have our kids back to school in person and now one of the last districts forcing 7 year olds to mask all day at school. This is embarrassing, considering we are a county full of such supposedly well-educated adults.

You are so right!
In the first wave, Maryland reached 64 deaths/day at its peak, last year MD reached 50 deaths/day at the peak, and this year it reached only 65.
All well-educated adults should be able to see that now things do not justify the use of such harsh measures like masks.

My husband thinks it’s possible but a few things need to go exactly right (not really science things). Indoor masking allowed to expire 2/21. Cases (even though they don’t really matter) stay low. Consensus builds around idea that forcing young children to cover their face for 2 years harmed some kids. CDC waters down language to account for said harms that have no doubt occurred. It should be easy to recognize that seeing faces or not something you can take away for years and everything is cool but it will require a lot of things going right.

2/3 of hospitalizations have been unvaccinated. Omicron has not been deadlier than previous strains, it has been more transmissible. More people infected equals more unvaccinated people dying. In maryland more than 80% of fatalities has been in unvaccinated.

Educated adults should know that level of deaths is not ok AND its also about community spread, not just deaths.

We don't have actual numbers for spread as many are using home kits and not reporting it.

So that then just reinforces the point that omicron has been the least deadly wave. #deaths/# of infections gives you the rate. If the denominator is high the rate is lower than in a wave where denominator is small. Regardless, deaths and hospitalizations have been driven by the unvaccinated. Nothing to do with kids.

She is truly a piece of work. She thinks she is brilliant because she quoted literature at a board meeting. You didn't impress anyone except the people who haven't picked up an actual book in their adult lives. Everyone else was rolling their eyes as you made a fool out of yourself.

The truly sick individuals on this thread are evil through and through. You need to ask yourself why someone would advocate for unmasking before the pandemic is over.

I think they just want to see just how stupid Americans are?

The majority of European countries are not masking their kids under 12. One of those really dumb countries is the UK. Denmark announced today that COVID no longer is a public health concern. And the dumb WHO does not recommend masking kids under 5. Yeah, but Americans are the dumbest.

You cannot compare Denmark and other countries to the US, who will also do things like close boarders and have universal health care.

That is following the science.

There must be enough variation between regions and counties now to do the statistical analysis.

There is definitely data! Strong enough data to show that it doesn’t make enough of a difference.

Mask optional by Spring Break, regardless of whether numbers go back up or not.

I still remember when the DCUM trolls posted the no-masking in summer 2020.. then Fall 2020.. then Spring 21, then Summer 21, then Fall 21, and now again!!!

Just goes to show that Idiocracy is not sci fi, it's a documentary of our future!

It's a legitimate question of when masks can be optional because either the community spread is low enough /vaccines are prevalent. We are not out of the proverbial woods yet. My prediction is that MSDE we'll ditch the mask mandate in the summer of 2022 not during spring break if the numbers stay low like last summer.

I will reiterate though that making masks optional is theoretically apparent choice but in reality it's going to be a student choice especially in a secondary school where you're asking a teacher to remember which students have to wear masks and enforce that.

Making a Summer '22 decision before the school year even starts? Counting chickens before they catch is how we got here in the first place. Omicron would have to be the last variant, and we already know it's not.

Mcps made the decision to reopen in the summer and have a virtual option for the weenies so I imagine they will have to make some sort of masking decision in the summer as well

It was just reported another child died in VA. I'm sure you'll find some reasons to pretend it didn't happen.

I hope you're 12, because otherwise, how embarrassing for you.
