ECNL moving to school year part 2

I'm actually curious about this, not trying to be a troll. My kid is on the girls side, so no idea on the boys side. The reason for asking is it seems the age group change issues on this thread have trended to be more of a boys issue or the more heated posters are on the boys side...but if the % of players moving to actual MLS is so small for anyone other than the actual teams that are under MLS, then what is the point of playing in MLSN, especially if you are at a perceived disadvantage due to birth month?

I think the discussion is more heated NOW (not in the past) at the boys side because the girls scenario is already clear: all the girls will play SY.

However on the boys side MLS Next is still undecided, so for many parents the choice between ECNL/MLSN1-2 is still open, depending on what age system is better for each kid.

MLS Next 1-2 has a great level of competition, also ECNL, depending on the zone you live ... so they are comparable leagues. Next season, the key factor to decide club or team will be what system By/SY benefits more to your own kid.

Will be total effing chaos if MLsN stays BY for clubs, parents, kids. The Karen’s will be out in full force. Adding age as a modifiable variable will ultimately distract from player development, reduce love of the game and keep our national teams lagging behind.

So MLSNext1/2 will move SY, it makes perfect sense.

Regarding MLS academies, if they decided to roster their teams with BY in MLSNext1 (SY) they would play 5 months ahead, no problem.

I mean, I could see a case for the MLSN1 P2P clubs to make a carve out for BY for just those teams. It would suck, but they would do it if they had no choice. And potentially MLSN will give them no choice... But for MLSN2 clubs? Makes 0 sense to not be SY.

If the end goal is for MLS1 and MLS2 to be feeders for MLS Homegrown then it would make sense for then to stay BY. Also if Homegrown and Academy teams play each other it would make sense to stay BY if Homegrown stays BY.

Why couldn't they do that with a SY system?

Because MLSN was created by MLS to be a funnel for pro talent. Professional leagues around the world group players by year not bt grade in school.

Age cutoffs and groupings for youth leagues vary around the world. England uses academic cutoff (Aug 31). Spain uses calendar year but groups players in two year cycles (U10, U12, U14, U16, U18). Brazil has calendar year but it mostly aligns with the academic year that runs from February - December. (southern hemisphere). Brazil also has the 2 year cycles (U7, U9, etc.). Argentina has a calendar year. FIFA youth international competitions use calendar year. There is no "one-size-fits-all solution". The only thing that has been proven consistent by academic research throughout is that relative age effect is real.

For reference:
FIFA U-20 World Cup
Argentina (6 titles)
Brazil (5 titles)
Portugal (2 titles)

FIFA U-17 World Cup
Nigeria (5 titles)
Brazil (4 titles)
Ghana (2 titles)

RAE or just lying about age - a huge issue in other sports.

That reminds me of Freddie Adu saying he was 13

This is an absurd take.

Having one system that benefits kids born in the first part of the year and one system that benefits kids born in the latter part of the year isn't going to hurt anyone. It just means more kids will play soccer at a higher level - and lead to more high level soccer players down the line.

That said, if MLS Next choses to switch to school year, that's fine. It's their choice.

Are you new to club soccer or something? I hope MLSN stays BY so you see what an utter mess it will be. Before word of this change, no one talked about age cutoffs. Now, it is all people are talking about; and even super chill nothing to worry about people like you are checking these forums. If there is lack of uniformity within the same club, no one will shut up about it and it will be a new excuse or crutch for players and families, further distracting from player development and enjoyment of the game. ultimately the kids will bear the brunt of the extra pressure and distraction.

My daughter had private training tonight
He’s ECNL club director in California for a big club. He mentioned big changes are going to be announced in about 6 months.

I tried to ask said he wasn’t allowed to say anything specific right now.

Who’s got the best guess?

Word on the street is Clubs will be MLSN/GA or ECNL affiliated. No longer can have both.

USYS is shopping around for a potential partner with MLSN/GA or be merged and absorbed by US Club soccer and they will continue to build out their platform.

Someone said earlier USYS with ECNL. Seems like as good a start as any.

No they said Norcal (league) is trying to align with ECNL and it's not going well.

Is it just me or does it seem like 1 maybe 2 harpies commenting all the time who irrationally hate MLS Next.

I agree that there seems to be a lot of irrational hate (or is it jealousy?) for MLSN in this thread.

So there's at least two people that feel this way

Come on, just tell us. Which MLS Next club either cut your son or wont offer them a roster spot. Your posts ooze with "a woman scorned" jealousy and a need for revenge.

The NorCal league is aligned with ECNL
top league is RL, NPL, then various lower leagues. Clubs and teams can be relegated up or down. I’m not so sure that it’s going bad? I’m sure there’s always details to figure out as you change things.

Discuss anything even partially related to playing down and harpie will bring up biobanding. Which would be ok if they understood why biobanding isnt a good thing for players. Its almost like all they understand is ECNL or leagues structured like them and theyre trying to apply it to MLSN.
