We would have taken a spot at Cooper if we had gotten one. The commute is far better and DCI middle school is pretty chaotic for older child. |
DCI over any Latin is reasonable if you care about academics. |
This thread is not a Latin versus DCI thread. |
That is demonstrably false. More kids are below grade level in ELA and math (especially the latter) at DCI than either Latin. Here are the latest CAPE results for 4+: Latin 2nd St ELA 73.1 Math 56.3 Latin Cooper ELA 64.4 Math 50.2 DCI ELA 49.8 Math 26.5 |
I guess if you prioritize learning a foreign language over everything else and you have no other decent options, DCI is a good choice. |
Sweeping statement bearing little relationship to reality. Who cares about CAPE scores at DCI when middle school kids can take advanced math and get grouped in science and social studies classes with high achievers? In the high school, classes are tracked. We can't afford a private, didn't get into BASIS or a Latin and don't want to move, so we make the best of the situation.
|
If the classes are tracked, and you have a big enough cohort to stay advanced, then I agree, CAPE scores are irrelevant. |
We also played the lottery, won a spot at Walls, and then turned it down. The reason we played is because we wanted our kid to go through the application process and decide for themselves if DCI is the right place for them. |
That’s completely different. Latin is purely lottery. Walls has an application process so I could see the benefit of going through that process. PP insists that DCI is so amazing but then tries to lottery for Latin. |
I am the PP that got into Latin and declined the spot. I never said I was sure on DCI. We were fairly confident but not sure. We wanted to explore all possible options on the table so played the lottery and applied to privates. Then once we got our results and knew what our options were, we decided on DCI. We got into Latin and private school. If you are the type that don’t look at all possible options to then weigh the pros and cons that is your perogative. What is exactly so hard to believe here. Some families are absolutely sure and don’t play the lottery. That is also a group we know and again what is so hard to believe? |
Different poster- Latin is a better school for middle of the road average IQ learners. DCI is not good if kid is a middle of the road learner. It’s big and it’s mostly geared for high achievers and bringing up the button. Walls is great for kids strong in humanities, not good if you’re considering European colleges or are a math/science kid. |
Bingo. I would also add that you need to compare apples to apples. As said in this thread, DCI has 20 times more ELL and SPED. If Latin had similar kids, numbers would be very different |
It’s common knowledge that the high performing kids go to Basis. I would agree that Latin draws more the average kid. |
To add speaking for the CH crowd |
I've heard several people recently say they like the math and science teachers at Walls and that the ELA teachers are lame. |
