Different poster- Latin is a better school for middle of the road average IQ learners. DCI is not good if kid is a middle of the road learner. It’s big and it’s mostly geared for high achievers and bringing up the button. Walls is great for kids strong in humanities, not good if you’re considering European colleges or are a math/science kid. |
Bingo. I would also add that you need to compare apples to apples. As said in this thread, DCI has 20 times more ELL and SPED. If Latin had similar kids, numbers would be very different |
It’s common knowledge that the high performing kids go to Basis. I would agree that Latin draws more the average kid. |
To add speaking for the CH crowd |
I've heard several people recently say they like the math and science teachers at Walls and that the ELA teachers are lame. |
Latin and Basis are lottery so the whole idea of drawing kids is sort of bizarre to me. Lots of kids out both schools on their lottery list and hope for the best. |
Yes sure they can put both but let’s be real that ranking matters and eliminates one if you get a good number. If you don’t and are waitlisted then you could get in one and decline or take it and see if you get in the other. So sure it’s a lottery but self selection is real and you know it |
I actually don’t know it. I know lots of people who got into Basis and turned it down or went and left. Those people also ranked Latin higher and never got in. |
DCI is not really big. It’s about 600 kids in the middle school and 600 in high school. That is medium size like my high school. Big is like in the burbs where you have over 2000 kids just in the high school alone. IMO it’s the sweet spot. Not too big but big enough to have a big enough cohort for advance classes and wide variety and depth of curriculum offerings in addition to EC, clubs, and sports. |
You just proved my point. They ranked Basis just to see and when actually got the spot knew it would not be a good fit for their average kid and declined. Some still take it and wash out so leave. Yes it’s a lottery but once you have your options, you select what you want with those options. |
Apples to apples, you say? Do you always just make sh*t up? 1. There are not lots more SPEDs at DCI than Latin. Not sure why you think DCI would attract more SPEDs than Latin. Plus, don't SPED kids typically get extra time on CAPE? Why would you think that there are lots more at DCI than Latin, and why do you think that they do worse on standardized tests with accommodations? 2. There are more ELL at DCI than Latin for obvious reasons. However, there are about 4 or 5 times more ELL at DCI, not 20 times as you claim. Moreover, if you look at ACCESS test results, the ELL at Latin do better than DCI. In the last testing cycle, 17% of ELL at Latin tested proficient compared to 5% at DCI. So, Latin does a better job teaching English to ELL than DCI. 3. Hopefully, kids at DCI speak pretty good English by 10th grade. However, if you look at CAPE results for 10th grade, 63.8% of DCI students are below grade level in ELA. 4. Looking at math in 10th grade, 93.7% of DCI students are below grade level in math. And math doesn't require English fluency. |
Basis is a very rigorous school. Lots of people list it in the lottery but realize that it wouldn't be a good fit for their kid so they go elsewhere. |
What is this crazy word salad? DCI does have more English learners, more at risk students and more special ed students. I don’t think that makes it easier for them to do well on the CAPE or whatever. Not sure where this insecurity is coming from. If you’re happy at Latin relax. |
So the insecure Latin booster thinks special ed kids unfairly get an advantage on test scores? Ok. Sounds like a fantastic parent community over there at Latin. |
Draws the more average kid via lottery luck? Silly. Latin takes around 15% of those who put a kid's name in the hat, BASIS around 30%. Kids go where they get in! |
