Inauguration 2013 falls on MLK holiday

Looking ahead to inauguration day when Obama gets sworn in, it falls on Monday Jan 21th same day as MLK holiday. jan 20th is the official day for presidents to get sworn in but since it's on a Sunday, they will apparently do it on Mon. How's that for coinicidence and isn't it going to interfere with MLK observance and festivities.

It also means no additional day off for local fed employees as it stands.

I gotta say, I don't see any reason for Fed employees who can get to their offices not to work. The rest of us are at their jobs!

Because its a federal holiday- the federal govt shuts down its hard to be at your desk when your office is closed. BTW, fed are not getting a extra day off bc MLK day and inauguration day falls on the same day.

No. The president is sworn in on January 20th, not the 21st because its a sunday.

Feds get inauguration day off because of the logistics, but they already get the sunday off, so no need for another holiday.

hopefully they can work on moving the inauguration day so it doesn't coincide with MLK.

Where did you hear they were going to do it on Monday? I thought it was always the 20th, no matter what.

But that's my point. This is the silly kind of thing that gives Fed employees a bad name in the rest of the country -- extra vacation when everyone else has to work. Unless you work for the agencies impacted that day, it's just bad PR at a time when you don't need anymore of it.

Does Google pick up amendment 20 of the constitution. "The terms of the President and the Vice President shall end at noon on the 20th day of January"

The way I read the link below, the actual Inauguration is still going to fall on Sunday, January 20th (speech, parade, balls, etc.) but the federal employees would "observe" the holiday (ie: get a day off work) the next work day, which just happens to be MLK. You know, like when Christmas is a Sunday, so you get the 26th off instead, even though normally the office is open on the 26th.

All sounds reasonable to me. I really don't think they are moving the actual Inauguration. I'm not a Constitutional scholar, but I think January 20th is actually in there somewhere.

Your link indicates that it will still be the 20th, however, feds will get the 21st off in lieu of Sunday. I do hope your day improves, it sounds like it must be a rough one.

14:37, no. Feds are already off that day. They will not get an additional day off.
