12/9/24 Region 3 - Edison, West Potomac, Mount Vernon. 300 attendees. Far different than Reid 's orchestration for Region 5. Note Reid + Dunne sticking in a new program only available for West Potomac pyramid rather than changing boundaries. https://mvonthemove.com/bucknell-elementary-decides-to-add-montessori-program-option-after-all/

Am I reading this right in that both community reps come from Mt. Vernon and one of them no longer has kids in school??? Wowwwwww.

I don’t think either have kids in the schools anymore! Insane. I thought the 2 reps from each pyramid had to be parents or caregivers. And then they added other people from the schools/community groups etc. To not have a single current parent is a disgrace to this process

But also....as we've seen with all the quarreling on here, would it matter? People still seem locked in on protecting their own interests.

I'd almost think it would be worse having current parents....exhibit A - this entire thread.

And even the two committee members per pyramid is just so F’ed. For instance, look at WSHS where a number of elementary schools are in the crosshairs. Getting a rep from one at the exclusion of another could make all the difference to which elementary school gets moved. It’s really messed up.

I think it’s appropriate for people without children in the system to take part. We pay taxes too - we should have a say too.

You could have two parents from the Langley pyramid who happen to come from the Churchill Road and/or Spring Hill areas and think it's fine if Forestville gets moved to Herndon. Or you could have a community resident from Great Falls whose kids have all graduated but who would advocate strongly against that move.

I have to imagine that the representatives from each pyramid are largely against redistricting. It’s the hand-picked representatives for the special interest groups that concern me. I’m guessing they were selected to be cheerleaders for redistricting. Not sure why they get a special claim to the BRAC, but here we are.

Oh, interesting that there are non parents on this fcps thread.
Agree you should have a say, but the interests may be very skewed.

I think most community members are against large scale boundary changes, but a PP’s point was a good one: if the community gets the sense that large scale changes are inevitable, they will be more likely to advocate for “not their community” to be the ones to get moved. And if no one on the BRAC is from that other community, there is no one to advocate for them.

And agreed about the special interest groups. It will be VERY interesting to see who they are whenever FCPS decides to update the webpage with the full list of committee members.

Community members are supposed to make up part of the BRAC but the 2 reps per pyramid were said to be parents/caregivers. They have a much bigger stake in this

What does BRAC stand for ? I know it as Base Realignment and Closure.
