Who is being a racist? The person saying it is ridiculous to assume the housekeeper is ms-13 just because she is from central america?

his company is very large and has a large number of employees. Wint was likely a very low level guy, I guess SS did not hire him personally or even knew him.

They are not warning people to be vigilant because you are not at any increased risk due to this crime. While this was a horrifying, terrifying crime, we are not experiencing a wave of violent hostage crimes. Whether it's completely random crime of opportunity, or the family in question was somehow targeted, it's a freakish event that we see the likes of only a few times in our lifetimes.

Of course the police are urging the public to come forward with any evidence and to be on the lookout for the suspect, which is entirely appropriate.

Why no danger, dont these people usually hide in someone else's basement till the manhunt dies down, thereby holding more hostages and committing more crimes?

Wow, just wow. If it would have prevented their them and their housekeeper from being murdered, yes. He is a small business owner, not the federal government.

I too would like to know this.

You do what they tell you.

It's up to the individual to what level s/he wants to go with home security. You could have silent panic buttons installed in your home but you would need to get to one of them before you were tied up or whatever they do to disable you. You could keep non-firearm weapons in your home kept in various spots (away from kids obviously) such as mace, tasers, etc. You have to be able to do something before they take control and you are at their mercy.

Does anyone think the suspect's mother's business site (earlier in the thread) mimics this site, noted above? The suspect's mother's business site is horribly vague, leading me to believe she just wanted access to people with money, and that she deems people with money "stupid". Supposedly successful people achieved their status by being stupid? That's a new one.

I can't speak for them but I don't see why a letter of support would be interpreted as anything but kind and thoughtful.

As far as the bigger picture of how to support, I would think a renewed emphasis on crime prevention, both security as well as addressing underlying causes such as drug and alcohol abuse, unemployment, felony convictions, education, etc.

As far as a safe word: I think every family should have a plan of action, including safety words, if this unthinkable act were to happen to them.

My younger sister is friends with Katerina. They are getting tons of support from friends and family on Facebook, and I think that is what really matters. Support from strangers might seem invasive to them, especially as one of the girls has been very vocal on Facebook about invasion of privacy by certain media sources here.
