What’s up with parents not wearing masks at the playground?

I blame the CDC, not the parents. They are lacking in common sense, but honestly trying to follow public health guidelines while providing for their families.

Yeah, find me a daycare where at least the caregivers aren’t wearing masks. I really wish the CDC would update the guidance for kids though. How can we bring attention to this issue?

Canada’s pediatricians are bringing it to the attention through public documents like this one:

The debate here is so toxic, many are afraid to speak up for children.

I’m not afraid to speak up, but when I’ve mentioned it to the county they cite cdc as the reason for the requirement. How do you get cdc to re-evaluate?

Professionals need to speak to news media. Tracy Beth Hoeg and Monica Gandhi spoke up for kids regarding the unfounded 6 feet social distancing requirement, and the CDC did backtrack.

The problem with speaking up now is that the damage is done. The pandemic is nearing the end. There is a high professional cost to questioning masking, as you could be lumped in with fringe groups. So, they will just let it play out. One day, researchers will study the social development of 0-5 year olds that spent the majority of their waking hours without seeing facial expressions for an entire year.

I dont think masking is near the end though, I think there will be efforts to keep it in place until kids are vaccinated- which could be a year from now!

+1 sadly. We’ll have to get to zero Covid like Australia/NZ, or a pediatric vaccine before people will give up masks. Both are years off.

+1. Which is why somebody with some sort of authority needs to intervene- the negatives of young kids continuing to mask outweigh the positives. I'd argue this was always the case, but even more so once most adults are vaccinated.

I think it will have to come down to comparing mask optional school districts to those that require masks. Texas has left masking up to individual districts. Also, UK, Sweden, Denmark, etc. don’t mask young children. Tracy Hoeg has recently recommended RCT mask vs. no mask schools. With so many adults now vaccinated, she thinks it’s safe to run the trial. I hope someone will fund this research.

Sadly, those of us in blue states may be masking out children quite a while longer.

A study like that will take forever.
