I agree completely. Not to mention the math is completely inaccurate (if I see one more person on FB smugly post about 302! I am going to scream. Like, if you’re going to post statistics, learn to interpret them first!!) And it’s so condescending to presume to know my motivations for wanting my child in school. Also if I see one more teacher say how they don’t want to be the babysitter for a bunch of sick kids so that the economy can get back up and running.... stop calling yourself a babysitter!! You’re an educator, whose job it is to educate children!! Parents don’t want babysitters (at least I don’t), they want TEACHERS. If you want more respect, don’t degrade yourself like this. |

NP here but my kids have been in child care. And I’m going to be furious if they have to spend all of next year in child care like babies (they are elementary age) instead of school, where their infection risk is THE SAME but they aren’t learning anything in daycare. I truly do not understand why schools cannot be fully open 5 days a week for essential employees only, perhaps, who need their kids watched 5 days a week regardless but would prefer an education over watching TV while Miss Jenny tends to the toddlers in the other room. |
| The numbers OP presented are totally bogus. It is obvious that she has an agenda or made up her mind before writing her post. Why would she be trying to push her agenda on other people? |
(1) To make himself feel better about his DL choice and/or (2) to make others feel worse about their hybrid choice. After the amount of time he spent on this essay, I hope he at least got #1 out of it. |
It’s not a “she”, it’s a “he”. Who works for the NEA but conveniently leaves that out. And yea, he’s not only incompetent at math, he seems to think facts don’t matter and it’s perfectly okay to let his post go viral when it’s full of inaccurate statements. That’s just great. |
| I just can’t believe how many people like his post— dumb. |
again, people understand that he is not an expert, but I do think everyone have a moral obligation to not spread completely false information and the #302 number is completely wrong. He if fully aware that this number is incorrect but is too arrogant to change it. And sadly many of the people reading this crap are too stupid to realize that number is completely wrong. But hey if it convinces more parents to keep their kids home it's a win for those of us who plan to send our kids back to the classroom. |
Thats crap! NO ONE is getting a WIN here. Stop fooling yourself if you have been made to believe you are “winning” by more kids choosing DL. Neither option is a win. You have 1 giant school system splitting in two. FCPS will be running two different school systems, neither will come close to being good. |

The author of the original post doesn't seem to know anything about epi or stats. That person wrote: “Children only die .0016 of the time.”
First, conceding we’re an increasingly morally bankrupt society, but when did we start talking about children’s lives, or anyone’s lives, like this? This how the villain in movies talks about mortality, usually 10-15 minutes before the good guy kills him. If you’re in this camp, and I acknowledge that many, many people are, I’m asking you to consider that number from a slightly different angle. FCPS has 189,000 children. .0016 of that is 302. -- This assumes 100% of kids in FCPS get COVID-19, which seems highly unlikely. Instead of reading a FB post by someone with no training, check out this helpful thread by an MD who focuses on infectious disease. https://threadreaderapp.com/thread/1281310036673867776.html It suggests that opening schools is safest for elementary schools (particularly for kids under 10). This could be due to less of the receptors for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 in the noses of younger kids. |
| This idiot’s misguided rant is now just about every other post on my FB feed. I can’t believe his bad math is going to be all over the place and probably have more influence on the back to school discussion than anything coming from the CDC. It’s a textbook example of how to spread misinformation and lies. |
You can report it to Facebook. At the top click on the 3 dots, then choose Report then False News. The more people do this, the sooner it will be removed. |
CNN ran a segment on FCPS and spoke with Scott Brabrand. He said 1/3 had chosen distance learning. So I don't think Joe Morice's efforts made much of a dent. People overwhelming are choosing to send their kids back to school. |
+100 They’re trying to frame it as the “ethical” choice yet whenever anyone with completely valid reasons why it won’t work for their child (I.e. PP with severe disabilities or any number of families with parents who work 9-5 and can’t afford supports) the response is “you guys are just a small minority!” |
