FCPS TJ Class of 2024 Press Release - Buried; AA Admits "TS" to Mention

Arbitrary quotas will either result in many kids drop out after freshman year or result in school standards being diluted (as the administration strives to retain these kids). There should be a concerted attempt at the elementary level to get AA kids interested in STEM.
I agree that the issue is not with TJ, but with education that a child receives in elementary and middle schools and from their family. However, why should we force anybody to get interested in STEM, especially children of one particular race? I have 2 kids - one loves art and another one loves math, and their passions were obvious by the age of 7. If you tried to get my art oriented DD interested in STEM and TJ, she’d be so miserable and sad. It would make more sense to provide additional help and resources to AA and Hispanic elementary age kids who have already demonstrated interest and desire to learn math or science.

And yet we continue to indulge in the fiction that the passions of students who love math can only be met at TJ, while the passions of students who love art, music, or history apparently can be met at many other schools. It just shows how people will say anything to defend a magnet because what they really value most is the exclusivity.

The same School Board members who are almost literally tripping over each other in their zeal to rename Lee and Mosby Woods must take a hard look at shitting down TJ as a magnet. Otherwise we will know that they only go after the soft targets and easy victories, but aren’t really willing to do the hard work.

Black folks are the master race in a lot of African countries, Chinese in China and Indians in India. Maybe you should consider moving to one of those (depending on your race)..

Your hysteria is amusing. Your racism and classism is not.

I am a TJ supporter, but I don't think the presence or absence of TJ is going to make much of a difference to different tech firms. But I think you underestimate the value of the prestige of having one of the best public high schools in the entire country brings to the entire system.

TJ is more of an embarrassment to FCPS right now than a source of pride.

The reality is that TJ has become a magnet for kids of well-educated, mostly Asian 1st and 2nd generation parents which is an incentive to relocate to this area. A free public education at the "#1 public" is quite a draw. This is great for the area's economy.

TJ is mostly Asian not because "Asians are smarter" but because the Asians moving here intentionally for the schools are intent on attending TJ and filling up the spots. Whether it is fair or not to offer special resources/classes unavailable at the other high schools is separate issue, as is the heavy decline in non-Asian TJ applicants.

The notion that we have to keep TJ just as it is so that Asian immigrants will keep flocking to the county is not especially credible. TJ isn’t a driver of the local economy. About the most that can be said is that TJ draws Asians to Fairfax who otherwise might live in Arlington. Without TJ, FCPS would still have strong schools and in fact some of them would be stronger. In the interim, however, FCPS is using its resources in an inefficient manner that elevates the treatment of a small subset of students, primarily of one ethnically, over the treatment of other students, and sends a particularly negative message to non-Asian minority students. It is not a sustainable model for a public school in a diverse county, and it will come to an end soon.

What is that "one ethnicity" (or ethnically as you call it)? Do tell. I'm all ears.

TJ is a governors school - it serves kids from all over Northern Virginia, including Arlington, Loudon, and Prince William counties.

You must work in PR or may be you are a politician. You have a remarkable ability to stay on message - “shut down TJ”

<cue> there is racial unrest ~ build some warped logic ~ <conclusion> shut down TJ
<cue> local kids have to cross highways ~ warped logic ~ <conclusion> shut down TJ
<cue> Annandale is crowded ~ warped logic ~ <conclusion> shut down TJ
<cue> STEM magnets are a waste ~ warped logic ~ <conclusion> Shut down TJ
And so on.

It doesn’t matter to you that the current movement is striving for a far bigger social change (And fixing TJ may eventually Be part of the solution) but you have no qualms with attaching your narrow agenda to this much bigger cause. You don’t care if kids in other parts of the county have a lot more urgent issues with over-crowding. You will conveniently ignore anything that does not suit your narrative. Fact is you have just tired everyone out with a piano that plays only one tune. You can continue to troll - like you shamelessly did with TJ kid helping incoming kids on the board - but your posts don’t merit serious deliberation.

On a separate note - you should try to be the next WH press secretary. They value staying on message at the expense of fact and empathy. Trolling a kid trying to help will be your exemplary qualification for that job.

+1 Why isn’t there a humanities magnet in NoVa?

It’s amusing to watch many TJ alumni make a big push now to rename TJ, change the mascot, and call for change to make sure the number of black students increases from “TS” to 11 next year all so they can forestall the School Board actually taking a harder look at TJ.

As for the students, if you look at TJ Vents you’ll see from the anonymous posts just how elitist many of them are - not surprising since their parents, AAP, and TJ have drilled into them for years just how superior they are to other kids.

It is pathetic that a grown up person like you will scrounge teenagers’ forums to find material in support of your agenda. Teenagers rants are calibrated for a teenage audience. You of course are happily generalizing their parenting based on what you found in the ugly underbelly of the internet. Get a life - focus on being a maker not a destroyer. You will wake up happier each morning. Bitterness never got anyone anywhere. Read Dr King.

Keep in mind that a lot of parents of TJ students are immigrants and had to overcome obstacles in order to come to this country, learn English and find a job here. I believe that AA born in the US have immediate advantage over immigrants because they are US citizens and English is their native language. Yet immigrants on a visa, with broken English somehow manage to educate their kids by themselves, while AA who had a privilege to be born here always need help from the society.

I know an AA child who is incredibly bright, stem focused and aces every test. The middle school offered him a free TJ prep class. He didn’t take it because he didn’t want to go to TJ and be one of very few AA kids there among other reasons. There are STEM focused AA kids who can handle TJ and decide to stay at base school or go to private school. Let’s not assume anything about AA students or treat them as all the same.

It's a public FB page. Perhaps they make it public as a cry for help.

Returning TJ to its original use as a community school to help the immediate neighborhoods and expand the number of high school seats for county students is not destructive. It may be anti-elitist and anti-racist. Not surprisingly, some defenders of the status quo at TJ have their heads so far up their ass that they don't know the difference.

Holy crap. You do realize that for 200+ years, AAs basically couldn’t build wealth at all. Many immigrants who come here with broken English and $10 were highly educated in their home countries or passed Iq tests.

There you go again. I want the county dump moved from Fairfax. it was a pristine forest before it was converted into a dump. I really don't care for the rest of the county. And if you object, you are elitist. Nice try lady.

I wonder how many in the Annandale neighborhood have bought their homes from before the community school was converted into TJ. If you bought there knowing that the neighborhood school was actually a magnet then what is the basis of the complaining.

If I bought my house knowing I share a wall with I-495 then it is rich for me to later complain about the noise and in your case, ask for the highway to be relocated.

But carry-on, keep trying to leverage racism, elitism and everything else to get to your narrow goal. Selfishness is other side of the elitist coin.

My family also couldn’t build any wealth in our home country because the government kept stealing everyone’s money. Imagine that you’ve been saving for your entire life and all of a sudden the government announces that dollars have no value and we are now using a different currency starting today. This is what happened to my parents and grandparents.

In the US, poor and smart people can study for free. So many free resources are available online for a child interested in anything at all. Competitive colleges have a lower threshold for SAT scores for AA kids. My relative from a poor country wanted to go to college in the US, but had no money to pay for it. She emailed about 1000 US colleges when she was still in her home country telling them about herself, and one of them accepted her with a free tuition. When she came here, she also got a part time job right away and is now a college educated professional working in finance. There are so many opportunities in this country, no matter what a person’s race and wealth is.
