People taking their dogs into CVS, and other places that sell food

Actually, CVS policy says pets are not allowed.

This is a posted policy.

CVS does not allow dogs or pets — except for service animals, a corporate customer service representative said. We were told that CVS store associates are instructed to approach customers entering with a dog or pet to find out if the animal is a service animal. CVS relies on its customers to answer honestly.

Asking seriously and without snark: Why is she with you when you are heading to a place like a store? Do you mean you're on the way home from taking her to the dog park? Picked her up from her "dog day care" as you're walking/taking a bus home from work and need to stop at CVS? Heading home from taking her to the vet? Or just combining the tasks of walking her and going to CVS?

Genuinely trying to understand the circumstances in which an owner has the dog with them when knowing they plan to enter places where (even if the store "allows" it) bringing in a dog is going to get you the side eye at best and is possibly going to affect someone with allergies, for example. Not busting your chops over this, PP. Just not getting how the dog ends up being part of the CVS trip at all. My guess is that you're walking the dog and use the walk to go to the store as well, doing two chores at once.

We don't hate you. We just hate the fact that you are impeding our human, fear-free, and allergy-free shopping experience. Recently there have so many dog incidents. Every pet owner thinks his or her dog is fine and maybe it is, but that doesn't make it right for you to deliberately disobey store policy in any store. Some of us are terrified, partially due to scratching and biting incidents (I know a dozen or so), some of us have bodies that react with hives, and some have both. Have a little consideration. I have heard screaming children in stores because they were terrified of dogs, large and small. I felt so bad for them that I actually wanted to cry. I know people, adults and children, who have been bitten by dogs where the owners basically laughed and walked away without helping or giving contact information for shots, etc. Also, if your dog is a pet or emotional support animal (also not covered under the ADA), PLEASE do NOT say it's a service animal to get it into stores and other businesses. I reiterate: we do not hate you; we just ask you to have consideration for us. There are places to tie up dogs outside; I've seen it done. If you don't feel comfortable doing this, then leave the animal at home. People have been doing that for centuries; I don't know why suddenly for the past few years this has become a problem for pet owners.

Why do some animal owners want to treat their pets like people?

I just saw a man with a poodle, half the time carrying it and half the time dragging it on its leash, at WHOLE FOODS!!! WTF is this, people? He wasn't even trying to pass it off as a service dog -- he just didn't F'en care!!! He proceeded to pick out a donut or bagel or whatever in the bakery section, where there is open bread, then he got in line, where the damn pet was clearly romping around and bothering other customers in line!!! There are no-pets-allowed signs on 3 doors outside, people!!! What is wrong with pet owners? Whole Foods should be ashamed of itself!!!

If they want to treat their pets like people, then let them do it at home, where their families and invited guests are not bothered by this. CVS, Whole Foods, and other places of business, food or otherwise, are not dog parks!!!

Got a link for that? The only place online I’ve found that says that is some random website unaffiliated with CVS.

My local CVS does not have any signs one way or another about pets. I asked an employee there who said dogs are allowed. I just spent a while googling this and could find nothing official from CVS on this topic so I’m going with what the employee said.

PP: tying up a dog outside unsupervised is much less safe (for dog and passersby) than having them with you on a tight leash in a store, all else held equal.

Most safe for all? Keep your dog at your residence.

Well, then definitely leave it at home to assure that it doesn't bother anybody at all.

That's exactly right -- at home with your own family and invited guests who aren't bothered by it.

I wish people would keep their cats out of my yard. Why do I have to watch them killing birds and pooping in my flower beds?

Stores in our area should look into options that other cities offer, air-conditioned rentable outdoor crates
so a dog owner can shop in peace while dog is safe outside. It would be great to have those option
especially in the neighborhood grocery store so many people would shop so much often being
able to take a dog for a walk and grab few thigns at the same time, otherwise it is a production
if you have to get dog back home then go to the store. Good for business, more business..
better for bottom line and great for dog owners, what's not to love?

Friday was emotinally-stunted-40-year-old-white-woman-can't-leave-my-dog-at-home day at the Target in Potomac Yards. Most definitely not actual service dogs. Such fragility.

- emotionally stable, 40-year old half white woman.
