Do many Sidwell families belong to the Chevy Chase Club?

That statement would imply that I believe that the Club may discriminate in some lesser faction. I said that they don't discriminate PERIOD. It is my sincere belief, based on my experiences there, that good candidates for membership of whatever faith, color, or ethnicity would be welcomed and admitted if proposed by a member. That is all that I am saying - nothing more, nothing less.

What makes a "good candidate for membership"?

I don't think anyone on here is anti-clubs. They are replying to the op about a particular club and answering her/his question candidly. All clubs don't discriminate but the one op asked about has a history of doing so and apparently according to some they are still doing it but more secretly. Instead of being on here and being so defensive why don't you go play some golf?

Have you read the thread? There is a loud and vocal contingent who is very anti-club.

You were at a subpar club and didn't do the sports? Anyone in a nice club with fine dining and great tennis/golf/swimming appreciates and enjoys the experience. How can you not? I think you haven't really experienced it at a nice place.

If you are not on the board or membership committee, how on earth would you see discrimination, if it even exists? Not specific to CCC but all clubs, proposed members are printed in the bulletin. I have never seen a name and called up a committee or whatever to blackball a person. If somebody else does that, I wouldn't even know. Not everybody is always looking for something that isn't there. Some people are just having a nice time.

Do you think that the "liberals" who fought for the end of Jim Crow laws and discriminatory practices were wrong in their intolerance for the "civilized" white people who refused to examine their racist clubs? I AM a multi generation member. The Club is what used to be called 'Rockefeller Republican'. There isn't any right or a left. Everyone is pretty much moderate, open minded, values competence. Conservative on economics, liberal on social.

Was it George Will who said the country should be run by random pick of the Boston phone book? I would happily let 50 random CCC members run the country. You would get a broad mix of highly competent people representing all center left and center right views. There are very few ideologues there. It doesn't lead to a harmonious community of interesting and thoughtful people. That's who 'gets in'. Call it discriminatory, and it is, but they don't care about ethnicity or religion anymore.

With respect to how this chain started, the answer is no, there are not a lot of Sidwell Families at CCC. They tend to be ideological and very left. They aren't kept out, they just don't want to join, because they see moderate as right wing. STA/NCS/Landon/Holton families tend to also lean 'Rockefeller Republican'. Fiscal conservative, social liberal, and are feel more comfortable.

Its self selection, not discrimination these days.

STA / NCS tend to have the largest presence at the Chevy Chase club, followed by Landon and Georgetown Prep. From the publics its common to see Whitman and BCC stickers as well. You will see a few Sidwell stickers every now and then.

To be honest, in regards to this thread and all the ill-informed nasty holier-than-thou liberal comments, I think it's funny that Obama joined Columbia. Columbia is traditionally a Catholic club, although times have changed, it continues to be very Catholic heavy and, as a result, more conservative politically than Chevy Chase Club (not to mention all the nasty Catholic haters must be dumb founded now as well). This is a perfect example of how times have changed and people become members of a club that they have lots of good true friends at - that is what plays a significant role in who is a perfect candidate (to answer an earlier question). It's not the color of your skin, your religion, your political leanings, instead it's a desire to join the club, an ability to pay, and having lots of good friends who are members (strong enough that they will take the time to write a letter in support of your membership). That's it!

You, my friend, are making the liberals' points for them. It takes being a former President for an AA to have the social connections to even initiate the process. An exaggerated point, I admit, but using an outlier to support your case is feeble. Plenty of affluent AA families in the DC area. Plenty of Black golfers in the area. Plenty of nice families in the area. Plenty of nice, AA, Catholic families in the area. A bit of introspection might do you some good.
